Hi everyone,
I've been a long time Gnome user (since 1.X days), but after 3.0 I just don't like it. So I moved to XFCE, after I got used to some issues I'm now loving my XFCE desktop.
The this is I don't want gtk 3 apps (yet) on my system so I'm looking for good gtk 2 replacements. I'm in need of a good CD/DVD burner but I don't like Xfburn nor X-CD-Roast, I was looking to get something like Brasero or Gnome-Baker on my system. The problem is that Brasero is now GTK 3 and Gnome-Baker appart from not beeing mantained has HAL as a dependency. Suggestions?
Thankx,
spook

Well, it has been quite a while since I used CD/DVD burning applications. K3b was the most complete CD/DVD burning application that I have used. It does however require KDE libs, which are quite huge to download (atleast for me).
I have always admired the CD/DVD writing application in Puppy Linux - PBurn.. It is a bash script written using GTKDialog. But the UI is very very intuitive and it has support for almost anything and everything (including writing video DVDs, shrinking DVDs, etc)..
If you are willing to put in a little bit of effort you can have this awesome app running on Arch..
Here is what you can do:
Go to: http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=23881
The first post in the link above lists all the dependencies. Install all of them. Then download the pburn-xxx.pet file. This is actually a tar.gz file (with a 32-byte md5sum appended at the end). Extract it.. It will actually extract the folder structure (for installation on puppy linux system). The folder - "pburn-3.3.4/usr/local/pburn/" will have all the required scripts. You will need to run the "pburn script from there.. (You may have to copy all files in this folder to /usr/local/pburn for it to work properly or edit the scripts to pick up from the right location)
You will have to know a little bit of bash commands to get this to work. But once you do, you will have an awesome app..
Come to think of it, maybe I can do all of this and package it as an aur package.. Let me try that sometime..

Of course, there are a few others like graveman and recorder that you can consider.. But PBurn is superior to all of these.. :-)

he he Pee Burn.
Okay, I'll stop.

I've used both graveman and recorder. Both work really well.

If you do use pburn, please create a package build and upload to AUR, so others can benefit as well.
vinayv, you could possibly do this as well, if you don't mind.

I'm interested in giving it a try as well, I spent a couple of minutes to create a PKGBUILD, but this thing requires stuff, usleep, pfilesearch, ... Kiss my ass!! If anyone's able to get this to run I'd be happy to test it, but it's too time consuming for me, sorry.

Well, I'm using cdw and it seems perfect for my needs. No X, Gnome or Kde dependencies.

cdw rocks. great application and its new developer is really friendly. the next version is gonna be more Arch friendly btw. no more sed magic needed anymore in order to detect ncurses headers. site is cdw.sf.net btw

Did you try xfburn-lite? No HAL dependencies and works fine here.

I agree with you totally

@AndyRTR; right you are! xfburn is HAL free now! Watch for this auto naming of discs: "~1" - not compatible with some standalone players.
Offline
That probably means xfburn is sort of crippled then, as its software that hasnt been touched since ~2009 when HAL was considered (by some) state of art technology.

I have never created an AUR package before.. Let me try this weekend.. I'll post here if I'm successful in creting a package for pburn

Whew.. I finally made the AUR Pburn package, it was some work and much experience. Go check it out.
Note: I don't use it or XFCE, but it was just for the fun.

Hauzer, thanks for your effort..
I was trying to install the AUR package you made.. When trying with packer, I get this:
[vinay@arch ~]$ packer -S pburn
Aur Targets (5): cddetect pet2tgz usleep euphoria pburn
Pacman Targets (2): gcc-multilib gtkdialog

Installation failed.
Packer did not actually stop to ask when it detected conflict.. It spew out "Remove binutils [y/n]" message but continuted without waiting for my input and errored out..
Since it failed, I tried to use clyde.. Here is the output:
[vinay@arch ~]$ sudo clyde -S pburn

Even clyde did not ask me whether I wanted to replace gcc and binutils with their multilib counterparts.. It just assumed so..
Anyway, that is not the problem.. The problem is that packer and clyde are listing different dependencies.. Specifically, clyde lists pburn as the only package from AUR, but packer lists more.. I guess the other packages - pet2tgz, cddetect, etc are also required. But clyde isn't showing it..
Finally, I tried with yourt and I got the following:
[vinay@arch ~]$ yaourt -S pburn

Atleast yaourt is not asking me to replace gcc and binutils with their multilib counterparts..
Hauzer, can you confirm the list of dependencies? My guess is that yaourt is showing the right ones
Offline
I feel stupid.. I saw the PKGBUILD file and figured out the dependencies..
I'm still stumped that clyde did not show right dependencies AND both packer and clyde wanted to force gcc-multilib and binutils-multilib on me..
Offline
Hauzer, why does this pburn package depend on euphoria? It looks like euphoria is enforcing multilib versions of binutils and gcc..
In the pbun page in puppy linux forum, euphoria is not listed as an explicit dependency.. So, I'm just curious as to whether this dependency already exists or did you introduce it.
Offline
Ehh.. It's because the pet2tgz converter I made was written in Euphoria programming language, to exercise a bit. I've just rewrote it in C for everyone's convenience, so Pburn shouldn't pull Euphoria with it anymore.

Hauzer, I saw only one issue.. "PFileSearch" was required to run PBurn, but during installation it was not listed as a dependency.. I see that you have created the AUR package.. Maybe you should modify the PKGBUILD for PBurn and add PFileSearch as dependency
Once I installed PFileSearch, Pburn ran fine.. I did click on everything I could find and even export some folders as ISO file.. Unfortunately, my DVD-ROM drive is non-functional (some harware issue) for the past 3-4 months.. So, I could not test the actual burning to a file..
Great job Hauzer, now we have a good lightweight package for CD/DVD burning.

As you can see here, pfilesearch is an optional dependency, it is used to search for files, as explained in this thread. Everything works fine here, except I can't test disc burning as I have no discs and my drive doesn't write. Launch pburn from the terminal to see if it will output any errors.

Even though pfilesearch isn't officialy listed as a dependency according to the developer[1], the initial configuration isn't possible without it, so it is added to the depends list now.
