Has anybody tried the cream DE?
It is based on GTK and purports to follow KISS principles. They even have their own repo for arch. Since my current internet connection downloads at a wapping 48kb/s (yep, that is warp speed) and I have a whole lot to download I won't be able to try it before tomorrow

Most likely I never would bother:
And on the other hand, we think of the Cream Desktop Environment more as a construction kit than a complete, stand-alone Desktop Environment.

That is exactly the point which attracts me to it

Looks interesting.
There's only i686 packages yet, so I'll wait a bit to try it out.

Afaik their homepage says they have x86_64 and i686 packages for ArchLinux, .. going to test it now

Yeah, but they don't: http://repos.cream-project.org/arch/

It looks similar to E17, so I feel curious about it, but I have to wait for x86_64 in order to try it

I would be in that group also then. I don't have any 32-bit OS's in my home.
Odd that this long after 64-bit processors have been released, that companies still focus on 32-bit so heavily and sometimes ignore 64-bit.

I don't want to bash or insult anyone but all I see is a gnome panel with compiz and some kde-like widgets.
It may be a nice alternative for arch users who want a gnome2 setup, without having not to update arch.
Offline
it's open source.. can't the 64-bit users just compile it?

Ok, so it is not a DE per se, but a widget system for wm's and other DE's.

Well, python-elixir is only in AUR and maybe should be included in the repo.
melange needs libev but doesn't have set it as dependency.
Maybe I'll do some testing tomorrow.
The video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6zN2_YxHPg0 looks nice but for beginners the website really needs an overview about what components there are - and a description what they do.

looks cool. Maybe I will have a try in VBox

You can try it without VBOX, simply install all packages from the repo an start "melange". Thats all.

Maybe he doesn't want to screw up his current desktop by installing a bunch of things which he may not want later
There's no such thing as a stupid question, but there sure are a lot of inquisitive idiots !

I can confirm that like Ashren saw, earlier when I had looked that x64 repo was not visible

Is it stable enough? or does it mess up with KDE desktop?

if it doesn't fit well with KDE you can just uninstall... not like it's going to "destroy" kde

Running melange in an openbox-session only makes the desktop unclickable, is there something I am missing or how do you run some widgets?
