Failed to update - no address record

I'm not sure what happened, my wireless just broke.

running "pacman -Syu" gives:

error: failed retrieving file 'core.db.tar.gz' from mirrors.kernel.org : No address record (it gives this for core, extra community, etc..)

Any idea's on how I could fix?

wireless does not work at all. Internet is completely unavailable.

Re: Failed to update - no address record

try switching mirrors and see if that works.

Re: Failed to update - no address record

I get that when an invalid proxy is set... What is the output of `env | grep -i proxy`?

Also, if your wireless broke, perhaps you genuinely have no network connection? wink

EDIT: Also, try increasing verbosity with --debug

env | grep -i proxy = no output at all.

My network is fine, other laptops are connected.

Re: Failed to update - no address record

Hi!
I have seen other posts about this problem but I didnt really understand the solution.

https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=33488

Hmm... fixed the problem by removing pacman (pacman -R pacman) and then manualy coping pacman files into the corresponding folders.
Now pacman is running

what does he mean with manually copying pacman files, didnt he remove them?

Is there a more simple solution to my problem?

when I write pacman -Syu i get this print

:: Synchronizing package databases...
error: failed retrieving file 'core.db.tar.gz' from dev2.plugapps.com : No address record
error: failed retrieving file 'core.db.tar.gz' from dev2.plugapps.com : No address record
error: failed retrieving file 'core.db.tar.gz' from ftp.archlinux.org : File unavailable (e.g., file not found, no access)
 core is up to date
error: failed retrieving file 'extra.db.tar.gz' from dev2.plugapps.com : No address record
^Cerror: failed retrieving file 'extra.db.tar.gz' from dev2.plugapps.com : No address record

OK, you've just said completely opposite statements on 2 lines....
If you have no internet on the machine in question, then it makes sense that it can't resolve the A record for the mirror.

Re: Failed to update - no address record

By manually copying he means that:-

1. Download the pacman pkg from the repository using your browser or wget or anything & move it to the root directory. (change x86_64 to i686 if you have 32-bit)

http://mirror.cse.iitk.ac.in/archlinux/core/os/x86_64/pacman-3.4.3-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.gz--directory-prefix=/

2. Change your current directory to "/" & then extract it

cd /;tar xfvx pacman-3.4.3-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.gz

Re: Failed to update - no address record

Before you do anything like that, you might want to pastebin your pacman.conf & mirrorlist...

Re: Failed to update - no address record

Often "No address record" just means that your network is down.  Can you ping google.com successfully?

Re: Failed to update - no address record

I believe this means you have no internet connection. As skunktrader said, try "ping google.com". If you get a response, then the problem is elsewhere. Have you tried the instructions here: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Be … install.29 ?

The solution was to stop the transmissiond torrent download daemon. It seems as if the little box could not cope with such a big number of simultaneous open network connections.

Re: Failed to update - no address record

Update your mirrorlists. Before running an update, check your connection with
ifconfig wlan0
to see if you have a valid ipv4 address

Re: Failed to update - no address record

Thanks for you answer. But this wasn't the problem. As I stated below the terminal output, the solution was, to stop the transmissiond daemon. Maybe the maximum number of simultaneously opened TCP connections on this hardware (SoC) was met.
