Connecting Nokia handphones in 'PC Suite'-Mode

Hi guys!

I'm having some issues connecting to my handphone (Nokia 5800 XpressMusic).
When hooking it up via USB, it gives me several modes to connect with, of which all but the "Mass Storage"-Option refuse to do their thing.
"So, why is this a problem?", you may ask. I sync music quite often and the handphone's music library is only refreshed when copying music during a "PC-Suite"-mode connection.
This forces me to boot Windows and use the Nokia PC Suite to do the copying.

Whilst having the handphone connected with "Mass Storage"-mode, a mountable block device /dev/sdb is created and the phone's memory can be accessed.
Connected with "PC-Suite"-mode, dmesg gives me the following and no block device is created:

[ 3283.819690] usb 1-2: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 10
[ 3285.885117] usb 1-2: USB disconnect, address 10
[ 3286.866356] usb 1-2: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 11
[ 3286.992717] cdc_acm 1-2:1.1: ttyACM0: USB ACM device
[ 3286.993722] cdc_acm 1-2:1.3: ttyACM1: USB ACM device

I think this is because the "PC-Suite"-mode makes the phone behave like an MTP. Is there a way to make the kernel create a block device for it ?

Any help would be appreciated! smile

I used to have a 5800 - I just used Mass Storage mode to get music on to it. What app are you using to sync?

I simply cp my music. Did you use some special application to do the job?

I think that's what tomk meant, he used it as a storage device and simply copied the music over to the phone. I do the same on my 5530 as well.

And you don't have any problems updating your music library? Or do you simply use the file manager to navigate your music collection?

Re: Connecting Nokia handphones in 'PC Suite'-Mode

Are you remembering to tap "Refresh library" or whatever it's called after cp'ing your tracks over?

When I had the 5800, I plugged it in, udev automounted it, and then it was just like any other directory. I mainly used cp/rm/mv/etc with it, but occasionally mc as well. Of course, any file manager would do the job. That "Refresh" thing is important though - it doesn't happen automatically.

A better question would be, "What problems are you having?"

Oh, I forgot to post about that (I'm sorry Inxsible) smile
If that option were working, I wouldn't have opened this thread. Somehow, the refreshing takes quite a long time to find 0 files - so I'm thinking this might be a bug, as it did work correctly before the firmware-update to V 51.0.006.
I came across two series of steps to solve the problem just now and will test them:1 and 2. In case one of them works, I'll post the refined instructions here.

Re: Connecting Nokia handphones in 'PC Suite'-Mode

Okay, the following steps worked fine for me and the music library refresh is working fine again (to be done using Windows...):

  1. Connect Nokia 5800 to PC through Mass storage mode and cd into

  2. rm Private/101ffca9/harvesterdb.dat

  3. rm Private/101f8857/Cache/E/*

  4. Backup important files on the memory card

  5. Having the memory card selected in the Explorer, click Properties > Tools > Check Now. Select automatically fix file system errors and click Start.

I don't know wether steps 2 and 3 are really neccessary, but I did them anyway whilst trying out the other two possibilities above, so I'll just post them here.
