Hmm... Will gnome-shell work properly with this driver?

11.5 well...
GNOME3:
- activities bar: first time when i log in it was dark grey, with next login it was black with some artifacts (mouse cursors on top right side), and with another login it was fine - i didn't notice rainbow colours, but i was experiencing this behaviour in the past - it become rainbowish after more than 10 logins;
- animations are faster here, although moving windows on desktop still isn't as smooth as it should be
There are changes in powerXpress support:
- some in aticonfig (it still needs to be patched to avoid failure);
- there are 2 new scripts in (extracted ati driver package) arch/x86(_64)/usr/lib(64)/fglrx: switchlibGL and switchlibglx.
I guess i will add bspatch for aticonfig into catalyst-utils, but i will leave those 2 scripts for next update (tomorrow maybe) cuz i don't have that much time today to implement it in right way (i'm not sure if it's possible due to file conflicts - ie. installing libgl in 1st place and then catalyst-utils should be fine with help of those scripts, but doing this in other way should fail, same fail should happen when updating libgl)
So as soon as i will prepare and test this aticonfig's bspatch i will update AUR and repo.
Edit: aaah... i just looked into aticonfig and it's now working on those 2 new scripts... ok, so i will update catalyst without powerXpress support now (edit: AUR and repo updated) and leave powerXpress for next update
@k_ibou: (in respond to next post): good to hear that

Hi, Vi0L0 I removed the 20-fglrx.conf and set the default parameters of energy saving then I reboot the pc.
Once the system is up I leave the pc for around 10 or 15 minutes and the issue it's still present.
As you told me, I uncheck the options of monitor power saving, now it works well. I'm using KDE SC.

Gives me rainbow bar and is also very "slow" - e.g. Activity etc. 'judders' (is that the right word? I don't know, but I hope you get it anyway.
Power management works perfectly btw. Doesn't sound like my GFs hairdryer anymore *g*
Hope it gets fixed soon...

Yep, still the same problems in gnome 3 with 11.5: Slow, laggy and broken icons / top bar.
In system information at graphics gnome 3 display "VESA: CAPILANO". Does this have anything to do with it? I know people with intel where it shows "unknown" or something like that and it works there...?

I have your problem with my hd5770 and i can't find any solution. I left pc for some minutes and alt+resisub is the only solution when i return.

Everybody having issues with power saving, please try # aticonfig --acpi-services=off. It solved my problem (with HD5770). Please, post back to confirm.

@agapito:
Try this https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 22#p930622 , then you can also try turning off every option of power saving related to monitor.

Hi to all...
I'm new to Arch but not Linux! but I've just updated to the latest (or so I thought) but the catalyst GUI is still claiming version 11.4 so what have I done wrong?
I'm using packer for aur access and the command to update (used) was packer -Syyu and I just followed the prompts. So I'll try a full purge of the catalyst packages and see if that fixes it, or has the GUI config just not been updated? (I wouldn't think so)
So any suggestions I'm all ears ;-)

This bug is not related with monitor. Kde turns off your monitor after 10 minutes by default, i disabled that option on systemsettings / energy manager. After 10 minutes my monitor is still power on, but my pc is totally freezed.

My catalyst says it's version 10.11.
That was the first version I installed way back in November.
I think it's a fault in catalyst/AUR package, not in your doings.

Updated to 11.5.1 , everything appears ok , google-earth loads a little faster , used the " aticonfig --acpi-services=off " everything a ok so far.
Oh BTW pacman reports 11.5.1 loaded however ATI Catalyst Control Center still reports 11.4 ... probably the version info was not updated no big deal.

Hi,
I have a question to alle the ATI users out there, does anybody of you also have this bug, which I reported here
http://ati.cchtml.com/show_bug.cgi?id=120
and here
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=117683
I got no real help in this topic so far but I would like to know if I'm the only one who has to suffer because of this problem.
Thanks,
matse

So if I'm not mistaken the 11.5 version still doesn't work with GNOME Shell? If so, does anybody know if the next version will and when it will appear?

Regarding the panel corruption:
There is a thread about 11.5 at phoronix where a user has a suggestion or workaround for this.
I don't want to try or switch it yet (from radeon opensource), because of too often did in the past. ;-)

Version 11.7 or 11.8 might have a fix, if you consider, how AMD works.
And GrannyTux: This is a known bug. See reflexing's post.

This sounds to me a solution! I'll try that and report back...
Thank you all for your replies
EDIT: this does resolve the incorrect version being reported

Hi all
I just wanna comment, It's usual o regular that the system become slow (compositing, effects etc) after playing videos for a while ( an hour or more)?
That is what is happening to my system. I'm using KDE SC 4.6.3, mplayer or smplayer and I did what it's recommended in the wiki. I noticed that if I enable the accelerated video (vaapi) my browser(opera) became slow after watch one or more videos.
I remove vlc because it was given me troubles when I activate "use GPU" option. (don't remember exactly the name).
Thanks!!!
[edit] the system become more responsive after a couples of minutes without playing videos, but browser still slow.

@k_ibou: I never watched movies using accelerated video players, but my KDE desktop is damn slow anyway when enabling effects. Application launch takes more than twice and rendering openGL in a window is ~ 5 times slower (rough estimate). Right now I'm living without compositing (I value usability more than eye-candies even if semi-transparent Konsole windows have been very useful for me a couple of times), hoping that in some future release the KDE team will improve compositing performances.

This might be a stupid question, but I would just like to be sure on how to upgrade both Catalyst and the kernel. Is it just these steps according to the Wiki?
1. Install the new Catalyst - I'd do this with my AUR wrapper yaourt by running yaourt -Syu --aur
2. Reboot into TTY/CLI or kill X
3. Run sudo rm /etc/ati/amdpcsdb
4. Reboot or start X again
5. Then set up amdcccle - how do I set up amdcccle? By running aticonfig --initial?
6. Profit?
Thanks in advance for helping me not breaking my setup!

@k_ibou:
it is not regular, it shouldn't be...
Check out processes - is any of them taking too much resources like CPU or RAM?
Try to run glxinfo in konsole after playing video - is it better?
Is it happening also if you will turn Tear-Free Desktop option on/off in amdcccle?
Does it slow down also after using xv video output in (s)mplayer?
@Unia:
Your steps looks fine. You can set up amdcccle by running amdcccle in console (it's GUI application, you will need qt package to run it). You don't need to run aticonfig --initial if you already got working /etc/X11/xorg.conf.
BTW: yesterday i updated catalyst-total package: http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=31914
It is designed for AUR (aspecially yaourt) users and it contains catalyst-hook, catalyst-utils and lib32-catalyst-utils, so with it you can save time in downloading ati-drivers 2 or 3 times.
lib32-catalyst-utils will be added to the package only if you got x86_64 system and only if [multilib] repository in uncommented in /etc/pacman.conf file.
