Hello
I've used Tor and Polipo many many times before..for some reason it doesn't seem to want to work now on this Arch install..
If looked at the Wiki and still nothing.
After a restart Polipo doesn't start. I'm out of ideas.
Thanks,
Toasty

You should create a config-file now, an example is located in /etc/polipo/.
If you don't create a config-file, polipo will use its defaults.
So I then make the Polipo config-file and then start both daemons. At this point I use Torbutton in Firefox and go to the "Am I using Tor" site. It goes to load the page and never does..it just shows Connecting on the Firefox Tab. It appears as if I will time out but never do. If I try in Chromium at the same site it says I am not using Tor. The issue I'm having is I never get ANY errors or the like besides the problems in both browsers so its hard to tell what is really wrong..
Hope all this helps..

Is there anything in /var/log/messages.log?

what's different in polipo?

When you say you made the polipo-config file, what did you do? Did you just copy the example config as described on the polipo wiki page? Is your browser set to use a proxy, namely localhost:8123? https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Polipo#Browser
Also the wiki indicates you need to make a modification to the polipo config for it to work with Tor. Have you done this? https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Polipo#Tor

In /var/log/messages.log: May 11 10:59:53 localhost Tor[21169]: Tried for 120 seconds to get a connection to [scrubbed]:443. Giving up. (waiting for circuit)
Ive looked at all config files and browser settings and everything is directed to localhost and port 8123 as it should be with Polipo..I believe this may be an issue with Tor though. It doesn't appear to be making a circuit like it should.

Well not "everything" needs to be pointed at localhost:8123. Polipo's config needs to be modified to point to Tor. I use polipo but not Tor so I can't really help much outside of a google search. The only thing I've found multiple instances of causing this failure to establish a circuit is an incorrectly set system clock (outside of other obvious issues like blocked outbound ports.) Maybe something here will help: https://www.torproject.org/docs/faq#DoesntWork

Some good news...my system clock was off somehow..fixed that and now I get a 100% Tor circuit:
May 12 11:37:27 localhost Tor[4852]: Tor has successfully opened a circuit. Looks like client functionality is working.
So Tor is working however I still cannot actually use it..

Try using this config for Polipo. Then navigate to https://torcheck.xenobite.eu/. What does it say?
Else, try this:
[lars@x201 ~]$ sudo netstat -pntl
Active Internet connections (only servers)
Proto Recv-Q Send-Q Local Address Foreign Address State PID/Program name
tcp 0 0 127.0.0.1:6600 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN 3588/mpd
tcp 0 0 127.0.0.1:8118 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN 1330/polipo
tcp 0 0 127.0.0.1:9050 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN 1348/tor
Offline
Paste the output from this command please:
sudo polipo -v |grep socks
You can ignore this post if you're replacing your polipo config with the one Lars suggests.
