Entire system freezing up

I have been having a problem for the past few days, where my entire system would freeze up after two days, requiring me to reboot.  The problem has gotten worse, however, with it occurring more frequently (three or four times within the past 24 hours).  Not only that, but my system has started to freeze up even worse, with it ignoring the on/off and reset buttons.  This forces me to cut power from the computer in order to reboot it.

The only thing I can think of that would be causing this is the nVidia drivers.  I tried reverting to the 256 drivers from AUR, but they don't support the current version of Xorg.

Below is the contents of my /var/log/errors.log file:

Re: Entire system freezing up

Try blacklisting sp5100_tco module.

Re: Entire system freezing up

I just blacklisted it in rc.conf, and unloaded the module.  Crossing my fingers and hoping this will work :-)

Re: Entire system freezing up

The problem's still not resolved.  It cleared away the error message with sp5100_tco, but that wasn't the error causing the system to lockup.

This one is the real culprit:

May 7 03:19:38 localhost kernel: [ 35.254223] ioremap error for 0xcffb0000-0xcffb1000, requested 0x10, got 0x0

Re: Entire system freezing up

Found this thread, which indicates that its related to nVidia: http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=160186

Re: Entire system freezing up

Problem *might* be resolved.  The lockup occurred after I had run rmmod sp5100_tco, and blacklisted, without rebooting.  Since then, I haven't had any problems.

Re: Entire system freezing up

How long has it been that you've had no problems?

I've had a similar problem on this computer, intermittently more or less since I got it, I think. At varying times, my system would freeze totally. If sound was playing it would loop. I also noticed the SP5100 related messages in my dmesg logs, as well as the "ioremap" message. I've blacklisted sp5100_tco, and now that message no longer appear in the logs. The ioremap error continues to appear (this is more or less my first boot since the change).

I'm currently not running Arch Linux, but am experiencing this problem on both Ubuntu and Fedora. The problem has persisted from distro versions 10.10 to 11.04 and 14 to 15, respectively. I should note that I am also using an nvidia graphics card with the proprietary drivers.

I really hope we're looking at the same problem, because I'm pretty much pulling my fscking hair out over this right now.

Re: Entire system freezing up

I can consistently lock up X/kde when doing a horizontal maximization (aka, right click on maximize button) of konsole.

Do desktop effects have to be enabled for this?

Re: Entire system freezing up

I've been experiencing this problem more frequently today, after doing a system update that included kernel updates.  A friend I spoke with think sit may have to do with ACPI power management, though an nVidia glitch is still likely.

Re: Entire system freezing up

Earlier today, I opened up my computer and removed the video card. The display is currently plugged into the onboard video. I guess I'll at least be able to confirm that it only happens when my Nvidia card is present.

Re: Entire system freezing up

I have the same problem. However, it never seem to occur in the night when my desktop is on heavier use, but in the morning when it has been idling the whole night and I turn on display and start to tinker.

Must be a revenge of the Greenpeace. tongue

Anyway I have now blacklisted the module, we'll see what happens.

Re: Entire system freezing up

I have the same problem. I thought it was the CPU temperature at first, because I have had this problem in the past, but now my system is super cool.

Re: Entire system freezing up

The lockup is a known long-time-and-still-not-solved kernel bug with Nvidia graphic cards. Try using the "nolapic_timer" boot option.
