Hello!
I have just installed slim and lxde but now when i try to login i just get Failed to execute login command and i dont know how to fix it. I looked in the slim manual and to get back to the shell i had to enter exit as the username but then my cursor just became a x and nothing else so how do i fix this so i can login?

Read the wiki entry on slim carefully...look for where it says to create /var/lock. Also did you add an appropriate xinitrc for your user?

No i havent done any of those two things. But how can i fix this now when i cant login?

Boot your computer and type console at the username, enter the root password and it should take you to a xterm window. Do ctrl-alt-f1 to go to tty1 and and you can edit your .conf with nano, vi etc.

So i made an .xinitrc file and checked after /var/lock and it existed. Now i don't get a error message but the screen goes black for like a second and then i'm back at slim where i need to type my username.

Are you sure your configs are all correct? What do your logs show?
Which graphics card are you using?

Did you check slim.conf? Post your .xinitrc.

Im using a ati radeon hd 5770 and i use the open drivers. Lxde works thats what im typing from now and here is my .xinitrc:
#!/bin/sh
#
# ~/.xinitrc
#
# Executed by startx (run your window manager from here)
#
exec startlxde

Ok that seems in order. In your slim.conf, does your login command look like this? exec ck-launch-session /bin/bash -login ~/.xinitrc %session

I had some issues with Slim and Enter, when I entered login and pass Slim just froze and there was nothing I could do, so after messing with configs I gave up on slim and any login manager, so I use plain terminal to login and startx. I can't say that it somewhat related with your issue, but still, I think its no real use of any login manager after all, just aesthetics.

So that's ok. How does slim start? from inittab or $Daemons array?
