Hello guys, I got 2 problems with setting up my graphical package or something.

1. I've installed "Arch 64bit + Openbox Stand alone + Catalyst" on my desktop.
When I put my mouse cursor on the system tray, whole system freezes for 1~3 seconds.

2. When I open "Thunar", randomly icons and fonts are blurry. Sometimes it opens clearly but sometimes not.

There is no problem at all when I install "ArchBang 64-bit". This seems to be that I missed to install some specific package.
Any idea?

I have the same issue. Using the Catalyst driver with xfce4 on Xorg 1.10.1

This is a strange problem, and probably something stupid I've done. If I move my mouse to the lower right hand side of the desktop
(bottom panel or system tray it freezes for a second or so).
This problem is repeatable on Xfce4.8 and also E17 desktop.

I have a microsoft optical mouse, so its not (mechanical mouse ball). More specifically I'm running at 1280x1024 res and the area
where the mouse pointer sticks is about 4cm from the right hand screen edge and 1cm down.

I am using an Ati Radeon HD4770 card with the proprietry fglrx driver Catalyst 11.5 and graphics acceleration is fine.

My /etc/X11/xorg.conf below:

Being lazy I actually used this xorg.conf from PCLinux but I dont have the same mouse probelem on E17 or Xfce in PClinux.

When the freeze occurs I cannot use keyboard, then about a second later, I have control again. The system works normally and no
errors are wrote to /var/log/messages.
Only thing I can find in /var/log/Xorg.0.log is a warning:

[ 3651.919] Warning: LookupWindow()/SecurityLookupWindow() are deprecated. Please convert your driver/module to use dixLookupWindow().

Before using fglrx I was using the radeon driver. This is probably something stupid on my part, I am installing a new hard drive shortly so will
be re-installing.
The problem is as if some application is stealing the mouse focus, but I cannot understand why it is happening to that specific area on the screen.

In my case its not specific to Xfce but also in E17, same area, bottom right hand side

I'm using 32bit arch and can confirm same problem with basic tabbed window manager (twm).

I've tried running htop as mentioned earlier but no increase in CPU time, and no real clue as to the cause.
I have a feeling this may a driver issue as we are all using Catalyst ansd it is not common to any window manager.

Is anyone running the open source radeon driver?

Same weird problem here.

I think it started when i switched to Catalyst for better 3D performance.

This issue is certainly a Catalyst 11.5 problem. It affects many Linux distributions (maybe all of them) and, apparently, Windows drivers too.

ATI release a "hotfix" to fix this bug in Windows drivers: http://support.amd.com/us/kbarticles/Pa … otfix.aspx

We had to wait that hotfix for Linux and install it (but maybe ATI will not release 11.5b hotfix for Linux soon); or reinstall an older Catalyst version; or simply reinstall free drivers.

El fallo es sin duda alguna un problema relacionado con el driver Catalyst 11.5. Afecta a múltiples distribuciones de Linux (quizás todas) y, aparentemente, también a los drivers basados en Windows.

Nos queda esperar que sea publicado ese hotfix para Linux e instalarlo (pero es bastante probable que no aparezca la versión para Linux pronto). Si consideramos urgente solucionar el problema se podría instalar una versión anterior de Catalyst o simplemente reinstalar los drivers libres.

It causes some flickering on the cursor when typing and some times randomly, but it wont freeze anymore.

Thank you for posting, thats a fix for me. Cursor does tend to flash as described, more like a small box but I can live with that.
I'm sure also that changing to open source driver will fix this.

Same problem here. I'm supposing it is WM indifferent, happens in i3, FXCE and GNOME3.

I can confirm that it started after updating to Catalyst 11.5 and 11.6 does not fix that.

Option "SWCode" "true" does away with it, with said side-effects -- annoying but worth it ...

This bug does not show up with open source drivers but neither am I able to use it as some other problem arises: randomly starting flickering and subsequent freeze to black screen.
Wouldn't be using it anyway, performance is still bad ...

Hoping ATi addresses this bug ASAP, bad for their reputation ...

I tried the open source driver but was getting very slow frame rates.
I just upgarded to Catalyst 1.6 and same freeze problem occurs with Cat 1.5
however I am finding Catalyst 1.6 slower?

Not for me, it still freezes with my HD 3100, Kernel 3.0, catalyst-utils 11.8-1, catalyst 11.8-1.

I guess it's time to go back to Catalyst 11.4 and LTS kernel.

EDIT: Actually it got fixed when I removed xorg.conf and recreated it with "aticonfig --initial".

Yay, bug fixed.

EDIT 2: Ok the bug wasn't completely fixed.

My laptop's monitor has a resolution of 1280x800, I have an external CRT monitor connected with a max resolution of 1280x1024.
The resolution I want (1280x960) still has the mouse bug, but if I change it to 1024x768 then the bug goes away, and when I change back to 1280x960 the bug does not appear.

Unfortunately I have to make the resolution switch every time I start Arch, so I'm not sure if it's worth it to keep Catalyst 11.8 or downgrade to Catalyst 11.4.

type xrandr then find out what your output is, in my case its DFP1, use this script to change res and run it on startup with your window manager... Dastingo is right.. the bug disappears after changing resolutions.. this has been a rather annoying bug for the last 3 releases however this method should circuvent.

script:

xrandr --output DFP1 --mode 1440x900
xrandr --output DFP1 --mode 1920x1080
