Problem with X in Arch, but working in Archbang

Hello! I have been using Ubuntu and a few of it's derivatives for a little over a year now, and I finally decided to install Arch. I'm very excited to get a minimalist system up and running  and learn as much as I can in the process. I have gotten most of the way through the installation for Arch (x64) and am having problems setting up X and openbox. I have had limited success with NV and Nouveau (just X starts sometimes, but openbox does not).

The funny thing is, Archbang (which is basically Arch with openbox) works fine. I also have an Ubuntu partition with works fine.

I can not seem to find the answers I need on my own, so I'm finally looking for help. I am wondering if there is any way to copy some of the settings or drivers I might need from these other linux partitions which work without problems? or is there anyone who can tell me exactly what I should be doing to set up my system?

a few potentially helpful notes:
-I am installing on a MSI GX630 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6834152126)
-Video card: NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT
-I plan to run openbox with SLIM to log in

Thank you! I know there are tons of posts about setting up X, but I still can not figure it out. Any help is appreciated.

Re: Problem with X in Arch, but working in Archbang

how are you starting X when it does start up? Do you have a .xinitrc file that you can show us?

Have you read the beginner's guide and followed it to the T?

Try and see if X works without Slim. Put "exec xterm" in your .xinitrc and then startx. If it works you can look for a problem further down the stream if not you can check the output in the terminal and /var/log/Xorg.log

I have been starting X using the "startx" command. I could net get "exec openbox-session" to work.
I do not have a .xinitrc file. should I?

and I have followed the beginners guide to the best of my ability. up until setting up the display everything went well, but I got a little confused as to which display drivers I needed.

Either nvidia or nouveau.

X on its own has been working. Without slim or openbox X works fine.
Edit: X is now not working. I'm not sure what is different or what to look for. Only a black screen loads with "startx" when logged in as a user.

Re: Problem with X in Arch, but working in Archbang

When you startx and you have no .xinitrc then X is working but there is nothing to be displayed, hence the black screen. Unless you get back to the terminal with a lot of errors, in that case X doesn't work.

Make a .xinitrc file ( hidden file ) in your home folder and put this in it:

# start openbox
exec openbox-session

Re: Problem with X in Arch, but working in Archbang

it works! Thank you!

I can now run openbox while logged in as my user. (although I feel like I had everything set up the same way at one point)

Now how do I set up slim to let me log in without breaking everything?

Search the wiki for Slim. Everything is listed there.
