Both applications crash with the following error:
Inconsistency detected by ld.so: dl-open.c: 583: _dl_open: Assertion `_dl_debug_initialize (0, args.nsid)->r_state == RT_CONSISTENT' failed!
Is there a fix for this?

Yes I just upgraded the system and also upgraded google chrome from aur.
Googling a bit I found a similar error in the ubuntu forums but I don't understand how did he fix it:

I got the same error here in Skype after the last updates.
All webkit-browsers and firefox are also crashing (but because they can' t find the cups- (chromium) and webkit-libraries (epiphany) - wich have been updated, unlike the browsers etc.).
Firefox gives me:
Could not find compatible GRE between version 2.0.1 and 2.0.1

Are you using testing? Maybe it's the xulrunner update?
edit: I specifically mean the firefox error.

I don't use testing, my arch-system is not booting anymore now, btw. I never had such issues with arch since more than a year. But I think I'm going to start another thread for this issue...

See this thread. Problem seems to come from 'glew' update, and something to do with google-talkplugin. Trying google-talkplugin from AUR seems to fix for most.

Reinstalling google-talkplugin from AUR fixed my problem.
