I recently setup a raid5, but I'm not sure if its ok or not.
Here is what /proc/mdstat says,
Personalities : [raid6] [raid5] [raid4]
md0 : active raid5 sdb[0] sde[3](S) sdd[4] sdc[1]
976770048 blocks super 1.2 level 5, 512k chunk, algorithm 2 [3/2] [UU_]
unused devices: <none>
And here is what mdadm -Q --detail /dev/md0 says,
/dev/md0:
Version : 1.2
Creation Time : Wed Jun 1 13:41:44 2011
Raid Level : raid5

1 8 32 1 active sync /dev/sdc
4 8 48 2 spare rebuilding /dev/sdd

This rebuild has been going on for a while. I've left my system on for a few hours at a time over the past few days, but its still not done.

How big are the disks/array? The rebuild will restart each time you restart your computer, so leave it on without restarting until the rebuild is finished. It could take a loooong time with big disks, or if the system is doing other things at the same time.

The disks are 500gb each. 3 in the raid, 1 spare. I've left it on for a day, but it doesn't seem to be done yet. Is there any way to check its progress, besides mdadm and mdstat?
I decided to just recreate the array. I know when its created the very first time it shows the status of the rebuild in /proc/mdstat, so i figured i would just let it go. It wasn't a big deal since I didn't put any data on the array yet anyway since I was waiting for the rebuild to finish. This time I'll just let it finish before I shut the system down.

/proc/mdstat will always show you the status, not just the first time.

It must not have been rebuilding before, because it wasn't saying the percent completed of the rebuild anywhere. Also, after I recreated it, in mdadm -Q --detail was active, degraded, recovering.
Anyway, its all done now, and everything seems to look ok.
