Where is the Arch ?

Hello,
On the previous kernels, we could see at the very beginning of the boot an arch for each logical CPU.
Now with 2.6.38.8-2 it's replaced by pinguins... So mainstream...
Did you also loose the Archs ?
Can I get the Archs back without recompiling the kernel ?
Why would someone remove this ? It was cool smile

Thanks...

That's obviously because you don't have any CPU. It happens on old computers. (^^)

Re: Where is the Arch ?

Recently someone on the forum wasn't happy with Arch saying that it patches packages only when absolutely necessary and yet patching in its logo in the kernel. Perhaps it's an effect of that.

Re: Where is the Arch ?

Two penguins on my work machine:

[Longbow][~]
uname -r
2.6.38-ARCH

albeit only briefly before KMS (late start) kicks in...

That's the first thing that popped into my head, too. big_smile  Whatever, no skin off my back.  Although watching a couple penguin clones look at me like that during boot-up is... unnerving...

Re: Where is the Arch ?

now the arch logo is missing during boot. I know there are discussion/request on this. Still I like the arch logo which will remain the user in what OS he/she is booting.(Text is there, still picture is more preferable imo)

Perhaps a forum moderator will start a poll,
example being:

Do you like the:

  Arch Logo        [X]
  Penguin Logo   [ ]

Then again, perhaps a /boot/grub/menu.lst  option will override (kernel line), hmmm....
now I see custom logos buzzing in folks heads.   heehe

Re: Where is the Arch ?

The AUR package kernel26-pf still includes it (using it). I would suggest that you check the PKGBUILD and rebuild your kernel using the ABS including that patch in order to get the Arches again.

Re: Where is the Arch ?

Whenever i bother to build my own kernel i strip the Arch Logo from the ARCH patch. Please keep the logos vanilla. All hail the penguins.

Re: Where is the Arch ?

What I dislike in Linux is the penguin thing. Why must it be penguin, some decent mark or logo would be most suited for modern system. I love Arch logo and want it back tongue

Re: Where is the Arch ?

If you guys want it back, just build via ABS enabling it.  See the PKGBUILD for kernel26-ck as an example (in my sig).

and also disable early KMS (if you have it enabled)

or if you use intel card, you are shit out of luck because it requires KMS.
