X keeps locking up -- Kernel / chipset issue

After my system update today, X locks up on me and I'm forced to physically unplug my computer to reboot.  I think the issue is the newer kernel not supporting my graphics card, which has Intel Corporation 82845G/GL[Brookdale-G]/GE Chipset.  I've seen other forum and bug reports related to this issue.  So, I have two questions:

1) How do I revert to my last system state before my system update?

2) Can someone please recommend an inexpensive replacement for my outdated card?  The system is old, but I still need to squeeze a bit more life out of it.  The video card would need to be PCI, not AGP.  Thanks.
