Hi all,
i'm struggling because i'm not able to login anymore to my system.
everything seems to work until i put the password. pressing enter, it seems to load modules but before showing the last kde "jumping icon"...it freezes! What does it mean?
I tried to investigate and i accessed to terminal using crtl + alt+ f1 and trying to restart kdm it failed. I don't know why.
Can you please give some suggestion on how to proceed?
The last thing i did before it was the upgrade of the kernel and some other things
Thanks

Do any of them can cause this issue?

in kdm.log there are those weird messages:
klauncher(1434) kdemain: No DBUS session-bus found. Check if you have started the DBUS server.
kdeinit4: Communication error with launcher. Exiting!
kdmgreet(1427)/kdecore (K*TimeZone*): KSystemTimeZones: ktimezoned initialize() D-Bus call failed: "Not connected to D-Bus server"
does it refer to dbus daemon? it is installed and is before other deamons. I cannot understand what it means.

almost same here. after reboot it loads ok but slow.

the problem is that i'm not able to access the system through kde!!! i can only access to terminal mode!

Did you try deleting the kdecache-* files in /var/tmp?
I just had the same problem after upgrading KDE and this has solved it!
edit: I spoke too soon. In one of my attempt I tried KDE failsafe mode and was stuck in it, disabling compositing in the process.
In "regular" KDE, k_ibou solution was necessary to get passed the splashscreen.

Hi I was exactly the same problem. It looks like that has something to do with kwin compositing.
I fixed doing this:
vim .kd4/share/config/kwinrc
There you should do this:
[compositing]
Enable=false
then reboot and you should enter your session without a problem. Of course you will not have desktop effects.
My question is, Is a KDE problem or somethin related to video drivers or Xorg??

Doing that you still have desktop effects?

confirm: no effects disabling compositing!

I'm using nvidia card and I was reading that the new nvidia drivers is a beta
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=115750
so maybe it's no a KDE problem.
Is someone with an AMD drivers with the same problem?

Which method do you use to solve the problem?

Completely removing ~/.kde4/share/config/kwinrc allowed me to get back Desktop Effects. Mind you I'm using nouveau, not nvidia blob.
So to sum up, try to disable compositing :
I fixed doing this: vim .kd4/share/config/kwinrc
There you should do this:
[compositing]
Enable=false
If you can then login and you want to get it back or plan for the future: delete ~/.kde4/share/config/kwinrc and relogin. A fresh, sanitized file will be created without any weird blacklist code.

I'm gonna try that now, I will post the result. Thanks for the tip Pierre_Buard

nop, it didn't work. KDM freezes when KDE icon appear but I still can hear the entrance.
In fact KDE create a new and clean kwinrc but still freezes so be carefull when delete kwinrc.

It's a nvidia issue!!
I solved DOWNGRADING to nvidia driver 260!!
i hope it will be fixed soon!

Ok, this is weird. I have two machines both with arch 64 bits and kde 4.6.2 and I updated nvidia and nvidia-utils from 260 to 270.41.03-1 in both of them.
One of them(home) without a problem but the other one(work) is having this issue again.
I have had to disable OpenGL in kwinrc to get access to my work pc.
Is this related to nvidia drivers or KDE SC?
anyone is having this issue?
Offline
Same issue, fresh KDE install, with latest nvidia driver.
Offline
I think problem is still there! i upgraded after lots of time, but NOW again same problem. The main issue now is that driver can not be downgraded because of the hernel version!!!!! what to do now? should i go back with kernl too? my video card is nvidia geforce 7500 LE and from nvidia website the "certified" version is 270.41.19...the it should be fine!
Any suggestion?

I have had lots of issues with my nvidia 7300 LE. Has trouble with kde, Gnome3 and Unity.
For KDE, unchecking "Enable Direct rendering" in Advanced, desktop effects fixes the problems for me.

I added to xorg.conf the following section,
Section "Extensions"
Option "Composite" "0"
EndSection
but this is not a solution, it disables compositing as could be done in kwinrc!
I didn't understand how to fix this.
I tried following the wiki installing nouveau (late start)...hoping less issues...but...after all boot scripts, kdm doesn't start at all!

I just updated the nvidia blob and the issue still remains. I want to know, all of us have an old nvidia card?
In my case I have a 7300 GS, someone with a new card suffering this problem.

I have the same issue and also a 7300GS.
I found the following thread in nvnews where it is mentioned that it is not distro specific but mostly card specific.

in fact it's not distro specific! using old drivers (which means old kernel) it works!!
very annoying! It seemed nvidia was working well under linux...but it's not always true!
If you are able to make it working, i'll appreciate a lot.
Thanks
