[SOLVED] Sound not working

Hi,

I've tried listening to sound through my headphones but it doesn't work for some reason. I've tried the obvious thing of putting everything up using alsamixer, but no joy.

Is the music playing (check e.g. the seekbar) but you get no sound? No sound through the speakers too? Are all the needed channels in alsamixer unmuted?

Yes the music plays but I get no sound at all. No sound throught the speakers either. Channels in alsamixer are all unmuted and at max volume.

Some wild guesses: do you have one or two cards? Which one are you using (check in the alsamixer)?

Hey,

Thanks for the hint, I got it sorted. It turns out there were 3 cards picked up in this order:
1) NVIDIA's HDMI audio driver
2) Onboard HDMI audio driver
3) Creative sound card (What I wanted)

So the solution was actually quite simple, I just told alsa that I wanted to use the 3rd card by default (ideally I would disable the modules which loaded the HDMI drivers, but all 3 drivers were picked up the same module snd-hda-intel) :

~/.asound.rc:

pcm.!default {
type hw
card 2
device 0
}
ctl.!default {
type hw
card 2
}

And now everything works. Thanks for the help. Hope this helps someone else.

I have this card, have it working with editing asoundrc same.
Question:
Do you have PCM or Master working? and if so what did you do?
I have no master or pcm channels. I have to vol-up vol-down each channel individually, front, surround, center, lfe, side.

after a few hours I got a working pcm channel.
