usb modem connects, but is unusable

I own a sony MD 400 usb modem. I can connect with networkmanager 0.8.9997 + modemmanager + nm-applet, but I can not use the connection.
Running route will very, very slowly display a default gateway and an ip address attached to the network, and a resolv.conf is created.

[anders@katja ~]$ route
Kernel IP routing table
Destination Gateway Genmask Flags Metric Ref Use Iface
default 10.xxx.xxx.xxx 0.0.0.0 UG 0 0 0 wwan0
10.xxx.xxx.xxx * 255.255.255.0 U 2 0 0 wwan0

The above only shows up after several seconds of waiting.

But I can not ping any address, for example the name server by ip.

Now my question is, is there some configuration of policykit/consolekit that needs to be done? Some secret group I need to create? Some woodo to do?

This device worked fine last summer, and assumingly would with networkmanager 0.8. I would happily install networkmanager 0.8.3 if I can find out which KDE package to use (or nm-applet, but I only use that because the plasma applet does not really work with the gsm modem yet, it never shows up there).

Please help save the summer and the sailing season!
