hi: i have just completed my first arch install and i am so far delighted with features like pacman, and the knowledge i've already gained is incredible.
i have a problem though: i am trying to install the driver for my broadcom chip: its a b4312 chip which requires the broadcom-wl driver. in all other linux installs it requires the broadcom sta driver but i think this is the same thing. b 43 doesnt seem to work (it never did in ubuntu but i know its support is increasing) i looked at the wiki: followed the instructions and downloaded the tarball (the pkgbuild script just sent me to a page of text?). i un-tar the file, makepkg and its all successful yet when i try and modprobe wl it says no such module D:<
now, it cannot even see wlan0 which is annoying so it must have done SOMEthing.
so any advice: how to get wlan0 back into view again, what i did wrong installing the module, anything please!
thank you for reading

Welcome to Arch. As I've no way to determine your skill level, bear with me if I aim a bit low.
You stated there is no wlan0. How did you determine that? What is the output of ip -d addr ??
I have the 4312 and it works like a charm with the b43 driver; but you must install b43-firmware from the AUR

Yes, you want the tarbell. The pkgbuild button sends you the content of the pkgbuild, It is part of the tarbel, there may be other elements such as patches and install scripts. So, it was correct to grab and unpack the tarbell. I think you missed the last step, however. It looks like you managed to download, complile, and build the package, but you must install it with a pacman -U <the package name>.
Look in the directory in which you did the build for a file that ends in .pkg that has the appropriate time stamp of the build to find the package that needs be installed -- before you try the modprobe.

Did you do a "pacman -U" ?
>> Please check the wiki on the aur: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ar … g_packages
I would use an aur-helper like yaourt btw: http://archlinux.fr/yaourt-en#get_it
Just add the repository to pacman.conf.
I use the broadcom-wl module without troubles. I do blacklist b43 and ssb though in modprobe.conf.
cheers.
[edit] ewaller and I were quite on par here
The b43 could actually be the better choice as this one will respect kernel-upgrades.

Glad to help. Could I get you to edit your first post in this thread and add [SOLVED] to the thread topic?
Thanks.
