2 nics in one pc; loadbalancing?!

Greetings,

a few days ago, i placed a second nic in my server (fileserver)

eth0: 192.168.2.50 255.255.255.0
eth1: 192.168.2.51 255.255.255.0

then i tried to transfer some stuff, and noticed that now, one card gets the packages that are coming in, and the other one sends the packages out.

so, my question: is this normal?

if so, can this be changed in some config?

Two NICs connecting to the same network - I haven't done this, but don't you need ethernet bonding support in your kernel?

bonding is compiled in, and if you search for bonding, you will find a config file inside /etc for doing it.

Greetings,

the point is, that they are acting together on standard. i didnt changed anything.

the only thing i really want to know is: are there any dangers for the filesystems or can any other critical things happen?

I do not see how this would pose any more of a security threat than one NIC connected to the network. If you also cannot draw any ways that this would present a security issue, then most likely it is just paranoia and not anything to worry about.

Greetings,

hmm...i didnt think of security issues.
i thought more about loosing data or something similiar because of problemes beetwen the nics etc pp.

Re: 2 nics in one pc; loadbalancing?!

I too have the same "problem?!" ..i have a wireless nic and a ethernet nic, and if they are both active, it automatically downloads everything on the fast ethernet nic and uploads on the slower wireless...i haven't found this to be bad in any way..(except it feels a bit weird to be both wireless and wire-connected at the same time..)

if anyone knows why it would be nice to know...I know how to do this (loadbalancing, redundancy) on cisco routers/switchs but not on my own computer...pathetic big_smile
