USB 3G Modem - [SOLVED]
I use a USB 3G Modem to connect to the network. Its provided by ONDA Communication S.p.A. Model LW272 (BSNL)
They provide a proprietary software (including drivers) for use on both windows and ubuntu.
Firstly, On inserting the modem on a ubuntu machine, it treats it as a mass storage device containing a folder with the installation files and details. But this doesn't happen in Arch. Just for my curiosity, I would like to know why this would occur.
I copied these installation files including a script into my arch machine and ran it. This installed the drivers for the modem and a software by the name of "Join_Air" which consists of a GUI to use the modem for sending messages as well as the internet. The software starts up and detects the modem, but on trying to connect to the network it fails. A part of the shell output on which the software is running is quoted below. It appears that there are some problems pertaining to permissions which I haven't been able to find. The installation of this software required me to create 3 new groups - netdev, dialout, dip and add myself to these. I have managed to connect to the internet by manually loading the driver module and then running wvdial, but require this GUI for the SMS feature.

looks like the file /etc/ppp/get_route_info script needs the correct permissions, since the modem uses ppp, and i dont know what other files it needs in the ppp folder, you should simply allow your user read + execute privileges for the folder /etc/ppp

Don't waste your time with proprietary drivers&stuff from USB modem.
Just install usb_modeswitch&modemmanager&networkmanager&network-manager-applet (or kdeplasma-applets-networkmanagement if wou use kde4), reboot, insert your USB modem and set it from network-manager-applet or from networkmanager plasmoid (nm-applet have a good wizard).
I have a ZTE MF110 3G usb and It work very well in these way.
$ lsusb

Thanks, wammu was just what I needed for my purpose. Is it possible to make calls throught wammu.
As far as the proprietary software is concerned, I still wasn't able to make it connect after changing the permissions of /etc/ppp and subdirectories to 777.
I suppose this part of the shell output is what is troubling now.

this is due to ppp requesting DNS server settings from the PPP server, and then adding them to /etc/resolv.conf

Hello, I also having kind of similar issue. and I also unable to connect with internet when I try to execute Join_Air from terminal this is summary of error which I got it.
