[Solved] OpenOffice does not launch

After today's upgrading I am unable to start OpenOffice.
Are there newer/changed libraries of some kind incompatible with OpenOffice?

I desperatley need OpenOffice to get my work done..., and so far LibreOffice has not offered the needed functionality in the 2.xx version of OpenOffice.

Any suggestions?

Re: [Solved] OpenOffice does not launch

Arch uses LibreOffice by default so unless you did something different you now have LibreOffice, - there are differently named executables now. You can start it generically with "soffice". Or with "localc", "lowriter" etc. Could that be your problem?

Re: [Solved] OpenOffice does not launch

Alas, that is not the problem, since I have explicitly told Pacman not to switch to LibreOffice - i.e. not to upgrade to a newer version of OpenOffice.

Trying "soffice" from the command line results in: "/usr/lib/openoffice/program/soffice.bin: error while loading shared libraries: libicuuc.so.46: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory"

Looks to me as if the mentioned library has been removed.

LibreOffice gave me that error yesterday. All I had to do was "pacman -Syu" and then LibreOffice started just fine. That library must be in something else that has been updated very recently.

Re: [Solved] OpenOffice does not launch

is time to switch. hunspell and icu had soname bump in the latest versions and all packages from repository have been rebuilt.

since you opted to ignore libreoffice and still use openoffice, you won't be able to make it work unless you rebuild it.

Give what you have. To someone, it may be better than you dare to think.

Thanks - interesting... wink

Meanwhile I have installed LibreOffice again, in hope of seeing the former copy/paste functions having been fixed. If not, I will try reinstalling OOo a bit later.

I didn't ignore anything, but tried it and found a.o.t. the copy/paste functions had been regressed to unusability for my line of work. I am crossing my fingers this has been fixed by now.

Update: Yep, it looks as if the old copy/paste functionality is back again. Good!
That means I may stick with Arch and LibreOffice (wish I also could have the grid lines back. Oh, well.)

Update II: I was being too hasty. Calc in LO v3.4.0 crashes when trying to perform a Drag&Drop operation, and the horizontal slider refuses to move.

Re: [Solved] OpenOffice does not launch

I have the same problem with launching OOO, but I cannot switch to LibreOffice because of a bug: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=32181
3.2.1 is the version where I do not suffer this bug and I am not able to find this version anywhere (I wanted to modify AUR pkgbuild when I realized this). Is there any way to use 3.2.1 or that's the way it goes...

Re: [Solved] OpenOffice does not launch

As I've said before, the hack to try if you don't want to recompile something is

ln -s /usr/lib/libicuuc.so.48 /usr/lib/libicuuc.so.46

blindly creating links will lead to problems in the future however. What if there is a bump in the soname which depends on a certain version. Your link is not going to know that. Its best to rectify the bug rather than add hacks which you might not remember when you upgrade the next time.

Re: [Solved] OpenOffice does not launch

@ConnorBehan,
I'm sure you said it before, but somewhere else and not in this topic, so I missed it. I apologize not reading all your posts. Also I'd be happy to recompile anything, but I can't find the the version I mentioned.

Anyway I tried to create a link, but starting ooo failed with another and another library, so I didn't continue after the 3rd.

@Inxsible,
Thanks for the info.

This is getting ridiculous.
In addition to the bug you refer to, there is this: https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/24625?p … &pagenum=2

Furthermore, Calc v3.4.0 crashes when attempting a D&D. Together, these bugs leave LibreOffice effectively unusable for serious work. Seems we have to look for a platform which supports (older) OpenOffice.

I have no intention to leave Arch because of the developers of OOO / LO don't want to fix a bug. In the worst case I'll tweak my documents to minimalize the effect of the bug.

Thank you for the invitation, I'd be happy to contribute but I'm afraid I lack the knowledge creating patches, editing/reviewing source codes. sad It's my fault entirely.

You might misunderstand me, I acknowledge and esteem all developers either at Arch Linux or OOO (or whatever), because their work is kind of invaluable, however it'd be more human to indicate that a bug won't be fixed or something like that after a time, not just keep a user in the dark. however, I should be and I am grateful that I can use such tools for free at all.

Re: [Solved] OpenOffice does not launch

I have finally found a workaround solution which works on my KDE4 desktop with the Oxygen theme.

I opened the file
"/usr/share/applications/libreoffice-calc.desktop"
and changed the line
"Exec=libreoffice --calc %U"
to
"Exec=OOO_FORCE_DESKTOP=gnome libreoffice --calc %U"

I received a serious warning as I opened LO Calc the first time afterwards, but it's been smooth sailing since.

I have not tried, but surmise this method works for all the various "/usr/share/applications/libreoffice-*.desktop" files. Many thanks to whomever led me onto the right track in this wiki:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Op … OpenOffice

The horizontal slider is working and I can D&D without LibreOffice crashing!

Given how little noise there has been about these rather crippling bugs, one may wonder how many are actually using OOo/LO/Linux for any serious work...
