It uses ~350MB when it starts, and after browsing & editing some photos, it goes over 960MB.
As a result I have to quit the program before I start another memory-consuming application like virtualbox.

If I keep using it the memory usage keeps going up. Yesterday I saw a peak at ~1000MB. So I am wondering if it is a normal thing so that I don't have to worry about it.

I've used digiKam for many years and I've given up worrying about it being a memory and a cpu hog. This is normal which is a pity because it's a brilliant app.

Good to hear that. I love this app very much so I would as well stop worrying.
