I have a HP NC6220 laptop. Recently (after one of the upgrades), when I try to restart with "shutdown -r now" or "reboot", it hangs at the following message:
rebooting [5164.507829] restarting system
I have to hold down the power key to turn off the system. My other much older laptop (Thinkpad a21m) is working fine. So I'm suspecting kernel incompatibility with some BIOS settings or hardware. I'm wondering if anyone knows how to fix it. Thanks.

Most of the other issues along these lines report that a kernel update fixed the problem. In my case, it hasn't fixed it.
This issue does hold some promise: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=113985, although in my case the laptop _always_ fails to power down, that thread implies _sometimes_.
Specifically in my case: pm-suspend works fine, it does suspend the power. `shutdown -h` and `shutdown -r` both fail to power the sytem down. If I forget to manually power off, the battery drains all the way down. (Unless plugged in, but either way the computer does not power off).

See this thread, there are people who has had success disabling other modules.
https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=33872
Maybe try disabling other modules?

In my case, e1000e module was the problem. Thanks diegoviola for the good advice.

You're welcome, I'm glad to help. Also, thanks for reporting the issue upstream. Hopefully the real cause of the issue will be addressed soon.

I am having, right now, exactly the same situation as described in the original post - Compaq nc6220 laptop, Arch (from netinstall) with latest update run only couple of hours ago, shutdown -h works fine, shutdown -r leads to the situation described above. Adding reboot=bios to GRUB kernel line seemingly goes one step further, as the screen goes blank, but the system never restarts anyway, not until forced application of power button.
