[SOLVED] gnome-do won't start

I installed gnome-do trying to setup a custom Desktop instead of just using gnome or kde environments.
Every time i try to launch it, either as part of startx or manually, it does nothing. I ran it in terminal and got this:

Re: [SOLVED] gnome-do won't start

Are you running the dbus daemon? Gnome and KDE run it automatically, otherwise you have to start it via rc.conf.

UPDATE: also I suggest giving Kupfer a try, you wont regret it.

Please enclose the output in code tags; it makes it easier to read.  smile

Well not exactly dealing with you problem, I want to offer you an alternative. Have you tried using launchy or kupfer? They're both like gnome-do and I've read good things about them.

On a side note, you can edit your first post and add the code tags.

Thanks I didn't think to do that.

I tried Launchy and didn't care for it. As for kupfer, I couldn't find it using pacman and didn't feel like trying to compile source. I might try it later if i can't get gnome-do working.

Re: [SOLVED] gnome-do won't start

How do you start your X session? Maybe ck-launch-session is missing?

I have my ~/.xinitrc file run this script:

compiz &
fusion-icon &
gnome-terminal

I've never done a custom desktop environment before so I set it up like this after looking at this article:
http://maketecheasier.com/easily-create … 2010/08/10
And I only have gnome-terminal auto launch so I can run other programs from there until I have everything up and running.

Re: [SOLVED] gnome-do won't start

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Compiz

UPDATE: basically you should start your session from .xinitrc like this:
exec ck-launch-session fusion-icon

Re: [SOLVED] gnome-do won't start

Ok so I just changed my .xinitrc file to:
exec ck-launch-session fusion-icon
and restarted X.
Then I tried to launch gnome-do manually but it still doesn't work

Re: [SOLVED] gnome-do won't start

Do you have gnome-vfs installed? Strangely it isn't a dependency but my gnome-do refused to work without it even with ck-lauch-session in my xinit. Docky did the same.

I didn't have it; just installed it and tried again but it still doesn't work. hmm
I took a look at the error messages when i tried to run it again and I don't get why it's still saying it can't initialize dbus? dbus is installed and running!

Re: [SOLVED] gnome-do won't start

I just tried installing and running docky and its giving me the same fatal error.

[Info 16:52:47.527] Docky version: 2.1.3 Release
[Info 16:52:47.536] Kernel version: 2.6.39.0
[Info 16:52:47.537] CLR version: 2.0.50727.1433
[Fatal 16:52:47.718] DBus could not be found and is required by Docky. Exiting.

Am I correct in guessing something must be wrong with dbus?

Re: [SOLVED] gnome-do won't start

Found an old post with the solution!! big_smile
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=73944
basically dbus runs a system bus and a user bus. rc.conf starts the system bus but I needed to add "launch-dbus" to the exec line of .xinitrc
Now gnome-do and docky both work!
