Issues I have with the thumbnail rule

I have seen several replies by mods to read https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Fo … s_and_Code when posting images. Sometimes these are also in the form of a "mod-edit" and no post gets made. I fully agree that inline images posted with the IMG tag should be thumbnails to prevent the nasty surprise of waiting for a 1MB download when reading a thread. But that's about all I agree with.

The images I see are all external links! Even overlooking the fact that many graphical issues are impossible to notice in a thumbnail and need a full screenshot, I don't think it is Arch's place to dictate what image someone may link to. Indeed several off topic links point to youtube which is only about 100 times more CPU and bandwidth intensive. Even if people had real trouble downloading the images, there is no nasty surprise. When I see a link to a screenshot, I fully expect it to be a full size screenshot - that is the standard everywhere else on the web. Would you relax the rule if those links were posted with a "Warning: large image!" message? Additionally, many Archers link to the same image in other forums (a support request by an Archer using GNOME might be posted in the Arch forums, the GNOME support forums and the various gnome IRC channels). Having to upload different images to accomodate the preferences of these support channels makes it more difficult to get help.

All the same, I can accept the fact that Arch forum mods want all image links to point to thumbnails and so I decided to edit the wiki to make that clear. https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Fo … s_and_Code only says not to "post" such images. The fact that this applies to links and not just IMG tags is absent. However I could not edit this because I am not a mod. Can we please do something about this?

Great things come in tar.xz packages.

Re: Issues I have with the thumbnail rule

I think you are confused. The links that you see are after the mod has removed the img tags. If not, please provide an example of what you are talking about.

Because the OP had posted it in img tags, the picture was displayed within the thread. If you are using an external link, you can post as large an image as you want. But not inline on the forum threads. On the threads itself, you need to either simply provide a link to the image OR upload the image to an image hosting site and then provide the thumbnail in the thread. The thumbnail can then link to the full size image.

Re: Issues I have with the thumbnail rule

Ooh I see. So the mod edit actually begins before the words "mod edit" are written. I would've seen annoyingly big inline images if I were fast enough?

In that case, please disregard my post. My only suggestion might be to code an image check into the routine that parses BBCode so the forum automatically stops you from inlining an image that is too big. Not sure how hard this is to do with FluxBB.

Unless FluxBB devs do this, its not gonna happen. We just use the vanilla FluxBB forums. You can create a feature request on their bug tracker and hope that the devs accept it for the next release.
