GNOME 3 kicks out to gdm a few times a day at random

Hi all,

My Arch installation has been working swimmingly until roughly ten days ago. Since that time, my session in GNOME will - for lack of a better phrase - crash and kick me back to the gdm login screen. I thought it may have something to do with flashplugin, but the last few times it has happened, I have either been on pages that had no flash on it or was working on e-mail. I also thought that perhaps it had to do with whether I was plugged into power or not, but thus far this kicking me off GNOME problem has been an equal opportunity offender.

Thanks everyone for your help.

Czar.

the next time it happens, log back in and check your Xorg.0.log and also your dmesg output. Post it here.

Re: GNOME 3 kicks out to gdm a few times a day at random

Czarcasmo, this is well known bug in ubuntu packages, mainteners pointed bug in xorg-input-synaptic which they are traying to fix, but no luck yet. There is 2 or 3 threads on this forums regardless this bug, but noone have any clue. What i saw there isn't any bug in bugs.archlinux which describe this issue. I was traying to represent this issue in irc archlinux bugs but nothing.
This is realy annoyng in the middle of work you will get logged off, it happens 3 or 4 times a day and is randomly. It is relevant to any application. some people report here when they revert  X packages to old ones they solved the issue. I tray that but not realy helpful for me. Only things that comes me to my mind right now is to downgrade kernel and nvidia pkg or any GPU pkg's, maybe it will help. I didn't do that yet, don't have a time.

As you can se this there is my thread whit same circumstances https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=120927

What I dont undestund, that there is many threads out here about this, what happens to those people who has this issue, Do they solved it?

This bug is relevant to any aplication
Only happens on notebooks
Doesn't depend on any DE/WM

maybe arch-devs will se this and help us a litlebit

Re: GNOME 3 kicks out to gdm a few times a day at random

markoer, thanks for the reply. I've looked through the few threads I've found on the board here regarding people having similar issues. Some people it's web surfing, some think it's due to flash (though I've been working on a document in LibreOffice and got booted out), some to other things. I've done nothing yet because nobody's found something that definitively works, so I basically gamble and save a lot. With a few different threads and a few people having issues with no obvious common cause, I'm at a loss right now. Inxsible looked at this yesterday, but I haven't seen anything yet. Maybe my x logs and dmesg look a lot like everyone else who's having the issue. smile

Czar.

Re: GNOME 3 kicks out to gdm a few times a day at random

Hi...there were some updates done this past week to all the culprits I thought it may be, but I was kicked out of my session again today. Is there anything new for anybody? I'm not trying to start another thread, just not seeing much action on any others, so I'm reviving one I started already. smile

Thanks!
Czar.

Re: GNOME 3 kicks out to gdm a few times a day at random

I'm the one who posted in one of the other threads..things are a bit more quiet overhere. I did thrown out a minute ago using opera on gnome3..
It's for me always the internet >> looks like a flash-issue I think. The logs do sometimes show some anomalies, however not with my latest crash a minute ago.

So I can't be of much help, it takes time to really tackle the issue I guess. And for most it just happens very randomly and perhaps not often enough to really worry.

Re: GNOME 3 kicks out to gdm a few times a day at random

Agreed. Just thought I'd toss it out there and see if there were any updates. ^_^

Thanks for the reply. Although, not that this should in any way make a difference, I switched from using gdm as a daemon and starting using inittab instead and haven't crashed. As far as I can tell, that should be irrelevant, but thought I'd mention it anyway.

Cheers,
Czar.
