Hey Tom,
what other virtualbox related packages do you have installed on your machine?
It seems that the community repo version is split into 3 different packages. Maybe I am missing the one which handles USB support. A search of the repo shows the following :
[inxs ~ ]$ pacs virtualbox
community/libvirt 0.9.2-1 [2.89 MB]
API for controlling virtualization engines (openvz, kvm, qemu, virtualbox, xen, etc)
community/virtualbox 4.0.10-1 [16.52 MB]
Powerful x86 virtualization for enterprise as well as home use
community/virtualbox-additions 4.0.10-1 [27.20 MB]
CD image containing guest additions for VirtualBox
community/virtualbox-guest-additions 4.0.10-1 [1.04 MB]
VirtualBox user-space tools for Linux guests
community/virtualbox-guest-modules 4.0.10-1 [0.07 MB]
VirtualBox kernel modules for Linux guests
community/virtualbox-sdk 4.0.10-1 [1.87 MB]
VirtualBox Software Developer Kit (SDK)
Let me know which ones are installed on your machine. I only had virtualbox and also virtualbox-ext-oracle (from aur)
Thanks

Just virtualbox and virtualbox-ext-oracle here also. I don't use libvirt for anything. For some reason (can't remember why), I downloaded the guest additions ISO to my $HOME/.VirtualBox, instead of installing virtualbox-additions. I don't have a linux guest, so the virtualbox-guest-* packages are unnecessary. And finally, I don't develop on vbox.

then I don't know what I am doing wrong. I pinged wonder, to ask what the differences might be between the package in community and the one in aur. Let's see what he says.
Until then, at least the damn thing is working.

you should get rid of virtualbox-guest-additions and virtualbox-guest-modules. this are only for guest arch systems

yeah I don't have them installed. I just listed all the packages in the community repo to ask Tom as to what packages he had installed on his system.
The only packages that I have installed are the virtualbox-4.0.10 and virtualbox-ext-oracle-4.0.10 (from aur) -- This combination does not work for me
virtualbox_bin-4.0.10 and virtualbox-ext-oracle-4.0.10 -- This combination works.

Hello people! I had the same Inxsible's problem: I can't access to usb devices in the guest systems. I tried without success with the following combinations:
Host machine: Archlinux
Guest machine: Windows 7 PRO
You can ccess: usb mouse, usb joystick
You can't access: iphone, webcam, external hard drive, pen drives (Windows can't install plug and play drivers, it returns an error)
Guest machine: Mac OSX 10.6.6
You can access: hard drive, pen drives
You can't access: webcam, iphone (iTunes recognize it but returns an error when you try to access to it)
Like Inxsible the combination that works is: virtualbox_bin-4.0.10 and virtualbox-ext-oracle-4.0.10
But WARNING! The versions of AUR/virtualbox_bin and Community/virtualbox aren't the same. You can see the full version number on the splash screen going to Help->About VirtualBox from the top menu of the VirtualBox Gui.
AUR/virtualbox_bin - 4.0.10_OSE r72479
Community/virtualbox - 4.0.10_OSE r72436
The revision number it's different. Maybe the community binary must be updated to the latest version.

no idea why the revisions are different but the source tarball has the same md5 now as we have in PKGBUILD

@Inxsible, @adriano can you try with a XP vm and see if is working on your system? If not, i think is a bug in virtualbox and it should be reported upstream

I'll try but the versions are different. Into USB Section of AUR's package I can see the USB Controller 2.0 checkbox. There's not that checkbox in the Community's version. I tried the SVN version, it works but the revision is about 3xxxx.. I don't understand...

I wanted to avoid having to try with XP -- because it takes an age to install.
But I guess I will try it out and let you know.

Note that the rhel5-1 and SunOS revision numbers are 72436, whereas all the others are 72479.

No, I tried the BETA version with the additions extension for it but it doesn't work exactly like the community version. Then the community version, svn version, BETA version don't work. Only AUR/virtualbox_bin works.

i see "it doesn't work" but i don't get it how doesn't work. does virtualbox even list the devices when right click on the icon, when vm is started?
try looking for differences between udev rules from virtualbox and virtualbox_bin

Yes virtualbox always lists the devices and all are enabled but I can't access on them.
So If I choose one of them, for example the pen drive, Windows guest system tries to install the driver but the operation fails.
On Mac OSX guest I choose the iphone device but iTunes can't recognize it so I cant access to device.

do you remember when it stopped working?

success, expect a package soon. notice that you need to install the pack and enable usb 2.0 controller (the option is missing right now and that is the bug)

It's true. I saw that in the community/virtualbox in the USB section there wasn't the checkbox to enable USB 2.0 controller.
