It would appear that I spoke too soon about both DEs working with the older driver. Now, I'm having a strange issue with gnome-shell and suspend/resume. It would seem that all windows a redirected to the desktop upon resume. The wallpaper is replaced by the texture data of whatever window is being drawn. I would revert all the way back to the 260.xx drivers if not for xorg-server 1.10.
Edit: now I feel like a total idiot. I fixed the problem by removing the noexec from my /tmp partition line in fstab. Seems latest nvidia libgl causes a segfault when it tries to write to /tmp and expects exec to be set....
