[SOLVED] wpa_supplicant: Could not read SSID from driver.

For the first time wpa_supplicant refused to connect to the internet, and instead gave me these errors:

$ sudo wpa_supplicant -Dwext -ieth0 -c/etc/wpa_supplicant_stud.conf
ioctl[SIOCSIWMODE]: Operation not supported
ioctl[SIOCGIWRANGE]: Operation not supported
ioctl[SIOCGIWMODE]: Operation not supported

Could not read SSID from driver.

I'm using wpa_supplicant v0.7.3 to connect ethernet to my student residence network, which requires authentication (IEEE 802.1X). Since wicd doesn't not support this yet, I'm using wpa_supplicant manually. For this I use this wpa_supplicant_stud.config :

ap_scan=0
ctrl_interface=/var/run/wpa_supplicant
ctrl_interface_group=root
network={
    key_mgmt=IEEE8021X
    eap=PEAP
    pairwise=CCMP TKIP
    identity="*********"
    password="***********"
    phase2="auth=MSCHAPv2"
    priority=2
}

Using windows to connect, everything is normal. I've searched around and found basically nothing on this. Any help would be appreciated.

Subquestion: Also (this, keeping me awake from sleeping) this config file is keeping both my password and username to my university in clear text - how can I do this more safely?

Sorry, this is what you get for not taking your time debugging. It all works now. I have to use the wired driver instead of the wext driver (probably put the wext there by old habits, when dealing with wireless). The command should read:

$ sudo wpa_supplicant -Dwired -ieth0 -c/etc/wpa_supplicant_stud.conf

That shouldn't make a difference for the driver, and in point of fact you often don't even need to include it in the wpa_supplicant command.
