Arch Performance - Wine

Hi to you all,

I was a debian user, and then became a Arch User and again i'm actuallly now as a Debian Stable User.

I was happily using Arch until i use wine i get some ODD results, NBA 2K11 was full of lags and even HL 2, how that was possible, my system was squeezedddd to the max, light WM with Openbox, latest nvidia drivers, jfs and so on....

I have tried Debian 6 Stable and with half of the hassle voila, NBA 2K11 was running normaly and HL2  was as it's best, even with a quick install ext3, nvidia old drivers and without aNy optimization, i have written this on wine (NBA 2K11) at the time:

"And you are right, the test i have done was in Arch Linux, Nvidia Driver 260 and still looking for the reason, i suspect of the version of Xorg.

Have tested in Debian Squeeze Nvidia Drivers 195, and the game run in my laptop, everything in high and besides the hang in tip off, and minor hang in replay or arena, it's fully playable.

The odd it's that in Arch i get more fps (23) then in Debian (19), but in Debian i can play in Arch i cant..Odd enough to me..."

I like Arch a lot but i love to use wine as well, any ideas why the hell i get this results in Arch.

More in Debian i use a damn package and in Arch it was installed from AUR.

Have you tried with wine from the repos?
Are you using 32 or 64 bits?

Yes i have tried, still i dont think it was from wine, i think it was related to Xorg + Graphic Driver.

The games runs but with lags, imagine you playing doom 3 and  your gun get stucked.

In Arch and Debian i was using 64bits.

My Dell is a Precision M4500 so hardware performance is not a problem.

Even my HP with 2gb RAM played well HL2 in Linux (Debian / Arch havent tested in this laptop), that's why i have tried HL2 in the Dell with Arch.

I have even a topic in Wine talking about this, my 1st impression was wine problem:

http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.p … ngId=60481

Thanks for the help.

PS: Another tip to the problem, i was getting lags with mplayer on 720 and 1080p movies and again in the quick not optimized debian install it runs without problem.

Nvidia drivers were installed from AUR.

My point is Arch were great until i push my graphic card, i'm litlle "afraid" if i can say that, to put time to configure Arch again to my taste, and the final result become like i cant use it.

My Dell Graphic Card is Quadro FX880M

No because in Debian, the official stable only goes to 1.1 or something, you need to use backports to get the latest version,  to avoid that i have quickly install playonlinux and test from there.

In Arch i didn't use playonlinux ofcourse, only wine.

Do you get some of this problems? With Nvdia Graphic every thing works but when you play a game or a High Res Video get lags in Arch?

Re: Arch Performance - Wine

if you are on x86_64 you need to install lib32-nvidia-utils or appropriate driver(lib32-ati-dri etc)

Give what you have. To someone, it may be better than you dare to think.

Re: Arch Performance - Wine

Did you get any errors in the logs / terminal or just lag?

Of course i have used the lib32 libs or wine dont get my game running.

Now i have made a bit of search and i see poor performance thread using my high end graphic card with nvidia latest drivers, like in here, from May 2011:

http://www.gog.com/en/forum/the_witcher … ards/page3

"Talking from personal experinece the 3D components of the drivers probably have nothing to do with the lag problem. Even for the people who re-installed their drivers without them. Maybe it was just the driver update that did the trick.

I never had the 3d components installed and the game would still lag.

Edit: My graphics card is Quadro FX 880M 1GB by the way. "

In my latest experience with Arch in February i think 260 Drivers were worst in my situation the 195 from Debian....

That's the odd stuff, i was loving Arch in everything, until i try my high Resolution movies and my Fav Game NBA 2K11, i was getting lags when i push my graphic card.

Everything else was more then fine.

By the Time (Feburary) i think 260 Drivers didnt get along with my Quadro when the old 195 did.

No errors only damn lags.

Make sure you have logging enabled.check your Xorg logs or dmesg. You might be surprised.

I believe. Will test.

Even so i think you get my point, with a I7 / 8GB RAM and Quadro FX880M 1GB i would at least be able to play 2 games at the same time.

Thanks for the support.

Will try again.
