http://www.gamestar.de/index.cfm?pid=1589&pk=18888But it jumped 3 cores to 30-45% with the fourth core hovering in the high teens. Half way through, the cores dropped to mid-high teens across all 4. I hope a little more optimization occurs, but since it's proprietary, it is left simply as a hope
Because Adobe can't get the "presentation" part of VDPAU right, they've disabled it for now, so we only have the "decode" part of VDPAU currently. So there's definitely room of improvement, in Adobe properly implementing hardware presentation.
Argh, if they have this much trouble getting vdpau right, we'll probably never get vaapi.

Runs fine on an older Core2 duo, starts two cores around 10% ~ 15%. I think you need to ensure /etc/adobe/mms.cfg is set properly.
I've had hard system lock ups with Amazon Instant Video on occasion with the beta, but overall big improvements with hardware acceleration. Full screen has a very subtle flicker that comes and goes too.
Thank you, I thought the right-click menu into "settings" was enough, but I had to enter "EnableLinuxHWVideoDecode=1" manually. I did something wrong somewhere.
After the first second or two, all cores plummet to ~5% on full screen video now. I also noticed the very subtle full screen flicker. Actually, backing up my chair just a bit makes it unnoticeable, so very subtle indeed

Yeah, the hardware decoding needs some work. With the video that Griemak posted at full screen, a quick htop snapshot of the six core, 3.4Ghz processor on this machine is:
47.7%, 14.6%, 21.5%, 34.7%, 9.9%, 2.6%
Using mplayer2 with vdpau to decode a Blu-Ray video that mediainfo reports as having a 33.1Mbps overall bit rate, this is what I get:
0.7%, 0.0%, 0.0%, 0.0%, 4.0%, 0.0%

It has a new 3D API. They seem to want to make a new generation of flash games.
Here is a demo application:
http://alternativaplatform.com/en/demos/maxracer/I tried the "high" version on Arch and on Windows 7. On Windows 7 it's actually kind of playable. Not very smooth, but playable.
On Linux it's horrible. It's like the whole thing is done in software rendering. Actually I think a well written 3d animation in pure software rendering would be faster.
Both with my laptop with an i5 480 and hd 6550 with catalyst 11.6.
I really wonder: Do they do that on purpose? Is it possible for them to write such bad portable code?
I think they haven't implemented the full hardware acceleration for Linux, as I have the same problem. The demo in Arch is unplayable, but it works great under XP. Someone on the beta aur page suggested checking the .cfg in /etc/adobe/ to make sure the hardware acceleration option wasn't commented out, but it was uncommented on mine already. They also have stopped developing Air for Linux, so no Air 3 This really annoys me because a game I play runs on Air and was looking forward to it making use of my video card for once

I recall an old joke that went something like this:
Q: When will a proper 64-bit Flash come out?
A: The day after Duke Nukem Forever release.
They were off by a month, but I'm getting worried about that end of the world in 2012 ;P

Hardware acceleration doesn't work for me with VDPAU, video clip performance is the same as flashplugin 10.x, the test demo from the posted link runs on approximately 0.5 fps.
(yes I have EnableLinuxHWVideoDecode=1).

What's your WM? If it's Compiz, then you're probably out of luck; Flash's VDPAU doesn't work with Compiz…
I would post a link with more info, but I can't remember where I found it.

lol, seriously? Man flash is hopeless.

I'm using Openbox with no compositing. Otherwise VDPAU works fine in (s)mplayer.

Did you activate hw decoding in /etc/adobe/mms.cfg? It should work then. But only decoding, not presentation.

It has been activated by default.
I don't know how to differentiate between decoding and presentation. All I know is that my CPU is heavily (ab)used by flash videos, while 1080p in mplayer uses VDPAU with no problems.
For example, I can't run this in fullscreen 720p (or even 360p) without my CPU dying on me (video is stuttering heavily).

Right-click on the video, choose "display video info" or something in that direction. It should say "software video rendering, accelerated video decoding". If you have that, it's the most this version of flash will give you. It makes sense that it's a lot slower than if presentation was accelerated too - because now decoded frames are being copied back into system ram (takes cpu resources) and then blended with the rest of the ui in software (takes even more cpu resources).

Yes, it says "software video rendering, accelerated video decoding". So I guess Flash still sucks.

This actually has a pretty good improvement on my Intel HD graphics over using the wrapped version, although I'm not sure how it compared to the old 64-bit version. Definitely having an ultra-smooth experience that allows me to multitask heavily while viewing high definition video. Good move, Adobe- you're getting there.

hi,
hw acceleration with vdpau works for me, after I've checked this in flash optioms. But when my system freeze second time after I've opened youtube video in an another tab to the state, that i can only move cursor, I've had to comment out the "EnableLinuxHWVideoDecode=1" line /etc/adobe/mms.cfg. No freeze after that, but I'm still not sure that the hw acc was the issue and I didn't find anything useful in logs. Anyone else having these kind of problems?
btw. from logs it seems that there were no issues with the system, so maybe using ssh I could have kill flash plugin, but this wasn't an option at the time when the freezes occured

So what else is new?
You can always go back to the "stable" Flash 10. It has it's share of overlay bugs, but it does have hardware presentation support.

Yeah, I had my Xorg freeze unrecoverably a few times when watching youtube videos since the new flash.

i know about this, but it's not as good as flash version yet (IMO). but my post was more about this behavior in general and YT was just an example...

For some reason, with Firefox 5 64 bit and flash 11 64 bit, anytime I close out a page with flash, my entire system locks up and I have to do a hard reset. Really annoying. I downgraded to flash 10.3 64 bit since I've had no issues with it....

Did you pause / stop the flash content before you closed the tab?

ya, the new flash isn't very good (especially since i am a compiz user).
however, one trick i am using, is to watch youtube in UMplayer. Umplayer gives you vdpau and works fine with compiz. watching HD videos on youtube - my 4 cores each use around 2-3%, with the odd one spiking/peaking at 7-8%... which i think is perfectly acceptable, if not ideal...
..now if the Umplayer developers would wise up and add google videos (search) to Umplayer, then i wouldn't even open a browser to watch video content on the web, and i would actually get to use vdpau in a useful way for online media.
