Hi guys I have a server and a domain.
I want every service like imap, smtp, xmpp, ssh and http to be available on this domain and not on different hosts/subdomains.
Like awesomedomain.com and not smtp.awesomedomain.com
So what should I set as a hostname? is it irrelevant? Should I just set the domainname as hostname? I don't understand this

please do not start threads in random forums. [testing] is meant for people using [testing] repo.
and you question is generally a basic linux question. Moving to GNU/Linux Discussion.
There's no such thing as a stupid question, but there sure are a lot of inquisitive idiots !

Oh my god I'm totally sorry lol. I thought I posted this in the networking forums. I made a mistake. Could you move it there or is it a general gnu/linux question?

That's alright. It is a general question as you don't necessarily have a problem with a package in the repo. You just want to understand the concept. Ergo -- GNU/Linux Discussion.

I believe you can indeed just set your domainname as hostname then.
I believe the subdomains come in handy when you have built up a solid userbase, and would want to split the smtp server from the rest for example. You could just change the IP that smtp.yourdomain.tld points to and your users wouldn't notice a thing. That opposed to having your users change all the settings themselves.
