Hello Core i5 and i3 users. Can someone please post the output of the following two commands for me?
grep 'model\|family' /proc/cpuinfo | head -n3
gcc -c -Q -march=native --help=target
The first tells me which CPU you have the 2nd tells me which settings of march and mtune I need to use for them. Why? I want to expand the quality of the packages in my linux-ck repo and need to know what recommendation to give for i5 and i3 users.

Forgive me if I'm stating the bleeding obvious, but the trend I'm seeing is that the "corei7" march/mtune option could be just as easily called "coreix", i.e. it applies to just about any (Nehalem) Intel Core i(x) CPU (and the SB/AVX option could just be "coreix-avx" ).

Graysky, your assumptions and findings are correct.
GCC 4.6 release notes:
- Support for Intel Core i3/i5/i7 processors is now available through the -march=corei7 and -mtune=corei7 options
- Support for Intel Core i3/i5/i7 processors with AVX is now available through the -march=corei7-avx and -mtune=corei7-avx options
"Sandy Bridge" has AVX (i3 through i7 extreme) as part of it's "difference" to Nehalem. The "Sandy Bridge" nomenclature can be identified in the model number. iS-xxx are Core i3/5/7 Nehalem chips and iS-2xxx are Sandy Bridge chips. The "i7 extreme" will be i7-3xxx format. Example: i7-870 is Nehalem, i7-2600 is Sandy Bridge. The "2" denotes SnB while the last 3 are the step within the model. The i5-2400 is less than the i5-2500, for example, and we are not as "far through" the generation as the Nehalem i5-750. When SnB hits i5-2750, we will be near the end and discussing Ivy Bridge.
i3/i5/i7 with only three numbers are -march=corei7 and -mtun=corei7
i3/i5/i7 with four numbers beginning with 2+ are -march=corei7-avx and -mtune=corei7-avx
Future probability: i3/i5/i7 with four numbers beginning with 4+ may wind up -march=corei7-fma3 and -mtue=corei7-fma3
Which could lead into the ridiculous with Haswell in 2013: i3/i5/i7 with four numbers beginning with 6+ may wind up -march=corei7-avx2 and -mtue=corei7-avx2
Hopefully, Intel moves on from the "i3/i5/i7" by then
I struggled with this a month or so ago. When I used "native", 'make' was stating "corei7-avx". As I had a Core i5, I dug into it to ensure it wasn't incorrectly compiling against a CPU more advanced, but this was the correct flag. The "3/5/7" is just a parent for model numbering and other features (cache, speed, etc) excluding instruction sets are affected.
I still have one remaining open question: within the kconfig, "processor type" has "Core 2/newer Xeon" and "generic x86" or close to those names... is there benefit in choosing the "Core 2/newer Xeon"? Is their regression when choosing this on Sandy Bridge? I have not noticed any errors or warnings using either of these settings, and there is probably no way to see if performance is different... (I've just been using the Core 2 and hope it's good).
