[SOLVED] Can't install Arch on new hardware

I just got a new computer and now when I try to install Arch (x86-64) with the netinstall, it keeps throwing address record errors. I tried installing from CD and then upgrading but it does the same thing. Sometimes the packages get through but the next one will always have an error of some sort. I've tried disabling ipv6 using both methods and it doesn't make a difference.

Here are my specs if needed:

MSi Z68MA-ED55
i7 2600K
4GB RAM
Onboard LAN, audio and video

The LAN is Realtek branded in the Windows device manager and I think the problem has to do with it.

doesn't help. Show us the exact errors. Have you also tried changing mirrors?

Re: [SOLVED] Can't install Arch on new hardware

Supports one PCI Express LAN 10/100/1000 Fast Ethernet by Realtek 8111E

I have an Asus P67 with this same solution and have had no issues, though I have been using the Releng ISO's with newer kernels (2.6.38 I believe was the version when I installed).

Could you also post the kernel version?

It's random as to which file, but it was

error: failed retrieving file 'example.file' from mirrors.kernel.org : No address record

Edit: The problem occurs with whatever kernel version is on the 2010.05 ISO. I'll give the testing ISOs a shot.

Edit: Also, the download itself when upgrading is very slow. I tried downloading the same files on Windows from the mirror I am using and it's saturating my connection.

It does the same thing with the releng ISO from 8/16. None of this happens in a VM so it has to be with the hardware.

Re: [SOLVED] Can't install Arch on new hardware

If you are sure (or want to go down the rabbit hole) it maybe a lan driver issue:

It looks like kernel 3.1 has an addition to the r8168 driver within the r8169 module, as Gigabyte boards have known issues with the r8169 module for their Realtek 8111E lan chips.  Perhaps MSI is using the same.  The solution has been to download the r8168 driver from Realtek and build it into the kernel.

Realtek driver:

Possible fix for kernel 3.1:

Re: [SOLVED] Can't install Arch on new hardware

I think "No address record" means DNS problem.

Try resolving hostnames manually, e.g.:

dig kernel.org
dig @8.8.8.8 kernel.org # GoogleDNS

If the later works, add "nameserver 8.8.8.8" to /etc/resolv.conf.

If that doesn't help, start by telling us how exactly do you connect to the internet.

Re: [SOLVED] Can't install Arch on new hardware

The problem was with the r8169 driver. Works great now with r8168. Thanks for the help, guys.

Edit: For anyone else having this problem, a temporary fix is to unload the r8169 module and then reload it. It will run fine until the next reboot when you can just do it again. This is a good enough fix to update the system and install the r8168 AUR package.
