Tip: Network Manager may connect faster with IPv6 disabled

For quite some time I've been bothered by the very long time it takes Gnome's Network Manager to connect to a wireless network.  From looking at the system log, I finally figured out a solution, which cut the time it takes to connect down from 26 seconds to 11 seconds.  I hope this will help others too.  Unfortunately, it has to be repeated for every wireless network you connect to.

- Right-click on the network status icon
- Click on "Edit Connections"
- Go to the "Wireless" tab
- Select the name of the wireless network
- Click on "Edit"
- Go to the "IPv6 Settings" tab
- In the "Method" dropdown, choose "Ignore"
- Click on "Save"

It does seem to speed it up. So simple and such a good tip. Thanks. You should add it as a tip on the networkmanager wiki.

You could also just disable ipv6 altogether - this will work for all network tools, not just networkmanager.

@benob: /var/log/everything.log showed that Network Manager was waiting for an IPv6 response and eventually timing out.

@tomk: I tried blacklisting the ipv6 module just now; it didn't keep Network Manager from trying to connect over IPv6.

Did you unload it, as well as blacklisting it?

No idea then, sounds like a networkmanager issue. Stick with your way.
