Hi there,
Yesterday evening I installed pulseaudio, everything worked well.
This morning:
% start-pulseaudio-x11
E: [pulseaudio] main.c: Daemon startup failed.
Here is what
pulseaudio --log-level=4 --log-target=stderr
gives me: http://pastebin.com/ft2nbKSD
I guess the interesting part is the end:
I: [alsa-source] core-util.c: Failed to acquire real-time scheduling: Permission denied

Any idea?
Thanks.

I have the same problem (same error in log).
Installed arch today, installed gnome. Everything works but pulseaudio.

Sorry for language mistakes.

Had the same issue here after a updating to Gnome 3.2 in testing

Since I don't have or use jack, to work around the issue I commented out lines 60 through 64 in /etc/pulse/default.pa

Strange, I don't have Gnome.

i have the same problem when updating too PA 1.0
"Inconsistency detected by ld.so: dl-open.c: 597: _dl_open: Assertion `_dl_debug_initialize (0, args.nsid)->r_state == RT_CONSISTENT' failed!"
and this is really annoying since KDE is not working properly without PA... -.-"

After the pulseaudio upgrade at least I am not alone. No sound.

Disregarding my comments about gnome, what do yall get commenting out the Jack stuff in default.pa and then re-starting pulseaudio ? I've had no trouble with my audio since then.
Offline
@delerious010, thank you for the hint.
I commented the Jack part (and bluetooth, as there is no such HW in my 6 yrs old PC) out in /etc/pulse/default.pa and then rebooted the PC.
Still no sound.
When I start mp3 e.g. with a player (any player), then see in Conky that pulseaudio takes ca 3% CPU time.

Multimedia audio controller: ATI Technologies Inc IXP SB300 AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 03)
I checked my alsa mixer settings with xfce4-mixer, but I don't really understand how alsa and pulseaudio work together.

goetzkluge you should start your own thread with detailed information since I'm pretty sure your problem is different from the one of the OP.

I installed Jack and it now starts fine. So it must be Jack related.
It doesn't run fine though. Lots of cracks and pops whenever some event notification is played in the background.

I got the same problem.
I solved it by opening the file /etc/pulse/default.pa and commenting the lines
.if exists module-jackdbus-detect.so
.nofail
load-module module-jackdbus-detect
.fail
.endif

Alright, so my initial assumption would be that something pulse related must have changed recently which causes PulseAudio to absolutely require that audio go through Jack. It explains why on systems without Jack, PulseAudio daemons fail to start looking for modules which don't exist.
@neumino : Thanks for testing that.
@GooglesGuy : You cracks / pops are probably Jack related, could you try to comment out those lines as we've done and see if your audio is back to normal ?
@goetzkluge : Your issues is totally different. Based on reports so far, the PulseAudio daemon would fail to load due to the missing jack module. Your situation most likely has to do with a muted output in your alsamixer ( don't forget PulseAudio has it's own "device" which is usually the default the in alsamixer so you'll probably want to switch devices .. F6 or F7 I think ). But ya, another thread would be more appropriate.

Ok, I commented out those lines. Pulse starts fine, but the cracks/pops are still there. So that's probably a different issue (perhaps a skype related issue).

I don't know if my issue is completely related to the OP's issue, but after the upgraded to pulseaudio 1.02, I too had no sound. I couldn't start pulseaudio or alsamixer. I downgraded pavucontrols, libpulse, and pulseaudio all back to 0.9 versions and everything works fine. I will investigate the issue and chim back in if I learn something.
Note, I don't recall what the specific errors were that pulseaudio and alsamixer were giving and I can't replicate them because I've already downgraded. I don't care to mess with trying to replicate it right now, because I would rather listen to music and relax!

Okay it seems I'm not the only one having trouble with pulseaudio. Shouldn't we report the problem, file a bug ?

I faced this problem today. I did not downgrade or change configuration by hand, but I copied previous /etc/pulse/default.pa.pacnew over current /etc/pulse/default.pa:
sudo cp /etc/pulse/default.pa.pacnew /etc/pulse/default.pa
Then started pulseaudio and problem was gone:
pulseaudio --start

pulseaudio 2.0 has already hit [extra] - and mtasic85's necro isn't the first time related to pa2 that someone's discovered that keeping track of .pacnews is actually important!
Offline
mtasic85, this thread is too old.
Please do as adviced, trying pulseaudio 2.0 from [extra] and/or follow the thread ZekeSulastin pinted to.
Closing.
To know or not to know ...
... the questions remain forever.
