Comments about using Linode

Hi! I've been a happy arch linux user for the last year (maybe more). I used to have a shared webhosting and after some investigation I found that my best chance would be Linode.

Obviously I'd like to install Arch Linux, but I'm a little concerned about security issues, so I wanted to ask you about your experience configuring and mounting a web server (L[A,E]MP) and general "maintenance" of the distro.

I've read the pertaining articles on the wiki, I'm just asking for experiences, tips, advices, ecc. How are the "default" options from the Arch Linux packages? Are they "secure"? Should I've to learn Apache and configuring IPTables like a pro?

Well, that's it, I hope to get some directions from you.

Re: Comments about using Linode

I've been running 3 x Linode's with Arch (Web Server - apache, Mail Server - postfix+dovecot and DB Server - PostgreSQL+MySQL) for over a year now. Haven't come across any security problems, but there's always the occasional -Syu problem. Being that it's a server, so X and DE aren't installed, there's probably less -Syu issues than you come across on a desktop, but it's still there.

The OpenSSL upgrade a few months back was probably the biggest issue. Anytime anything like that happens, you have to recompile everything you've installed from AUR/ABS, and while that's happening, those services will be offline.

Edit: I run a very tight firewall, and relatively heavily customized Apache config.
