[SOLVED] Occasional freeze on booting up

Hi,

I just installed Arch yesterday. The system randomly freezes on booting with the following screen:

freeze.jpg

The keyboard didn't work. I needed to hard reset. Booting from the fallback kernel has always been fine.

Before this, I had tried improving boot performance by following this article https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Im … erformance. After the problem, I tried restoring some options and that didn't solve my problem.

Below are my current settings:

/etc/rc.conf

#
# /etc/rc.conf - Main Configuration for Arch Linux

# LOCALIZATION
# -----------------------------------------------------------------------
#
# LOCALE: available languages can be listed with the 'locale -a' command
# HARDWARECLOCK: set to "UTC" or "localtime", any other value will result
# in the hardware clock being left untouched (useful for virtualization)
# TIMEZONE: timezones are found in /usr/share/zoneinfo
# KEYMAP: keymaps are found in /usr/share/kbd/keymaps
# CONSOLEFONT: found in /usr/share/kbd/consolefonts (only needed for non-US)
# CONSOLEMAP: found in /usr/share/kbd/consoletrans
# USECOLOR: use ANSI color sequences in startup messages
#
LOCALE="en_US.UTF-8"
HARDWARECLOCK="localtime"
TIMEZONE="Asia/Ho_Chi_Minh"
KEYMAP="us"

What can I do to solve/trace this problem? I don't have a separate partition for /boot, in case that's relevant. If you need more information, I will post them.

Thank you very much.

Re: [SOLVED] Occasional freeze on booting up

This is extremely similar to the problem I am having. The message displayed is slightly different, and I was not playing with any configs. I guess I should start my own thread, but I certainly will be watching this one.

Re: [SOLVED] Occasional freeze on booting up

please use the bbs-search mashine.
downgrade udev to 164 (udev-165 causes a kernel panic (sometimes)).

look also here: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=112275

A simple, lightweight distribution - Why the hell 'simple' ? It doesn't sound geekish -.-"

Re: [SOLVED] Occasional freeze on booting up

Thanks xephinx,

When I tried downgrading udev to 164, I got this message:

error: failed to prepare transaction (could not satisfy dependencies)
:: upower: requires udev>=165

When I tried downgrading upower, it turned out there was only one version being 0.9.8-2. This package is required by gdm and gnome-session.

Is there any way I can solve this?

Have a look at this thread especially wonder's reply on how to downgrade using the Arch Rollback Machine. Perhaps it might be of help:

I tried. That helped. Thanks Inxsible!
