Anyone owns here a Dell Latitude E5410?

Hi I wonder if somebody here own a Dell Latitude E5410 and was able to install arch on it (Especially the x86_64 version)?
At first I wanted to install Ubuntu on it but there are many known issues with this laptop, and I'm thinking about installing Arch since I love Arch more than Ubuntu.

Thanks.

Depending on the observed issues, you most likely will observe the same problems on Ubuntu and on Arch. The kernel is the same, after all.

True, tough since Arch being a rolling release, it probably have newer kernel than ubuntu.

I don't "own" it, but my employer handed me one, installed Arch on it using the 2010.05 x86_64 images;
I did have one issue: sometimes you wouldn't see anything during init, but once the tty's are spawned you can see them and/or I had to attach an external screen to see something.
Once the box was installed, the bootup behavior used to be like that too (no display during init, except maybe through an external display), however I believe some updates fixed that later on, so you can probably avoid the issue altogether by using an iso from

Re: Anyone owns here a Dell Latitude E5410?

Ok update.
First of all I installed Arch 2010.05 x86_64 Net install.
I had a problem with booting that after "waiting for udev events to be processed", I got black screen. Fixed it by adding i915.modeset=1 (or 0?) and this fixed it. The problem occurred only on initial boot, after the system was installed with the right driver (intel in my case) I did not have this problem any more.
Wifi and wired networks works out of the box (Its an Intel Centrino N-6000 for wireless and Broadcom for wired). Integrated cam works well.
Some features untested yet like: Tocuhpad works as mouse right now and I dont have the option to scroll, didnt test the fingerprint reader yet, didnt test dual screen, didnt test card reader.
One issue that bothers me is the Hard drive, its Seagate hard drive and it runs on 46-48C (while on windows it was like 28-30) and ofcourse the popular issue of Load Cycle Count.
I'm still playing with it to see what I can fix. When Ill be done Ill update the topic "Laptops which run Arch"

Re: Anyone owns here a Dell Latitude E5410?

My laptop is an E6410, I wonder if it uses the same chipset? There are several issues with the current Linux kernel and my laptop, but everything will be solved in the upcoming 2.6.39 kernel. Ubuntu has put in the pieces of 2.6.39 into their kernel in their upcoming release, which makes my laptop work great. I'm still sticking to Arch, and waiting patiently for 2.6.39 to come out so I can have a flawless experience. In the meantime, 2.6.37 seems to have worked out most of the issues.

Again, not sure if my laptop has the same chipset as yours, so everything I've said may not apply to you.

First set of problems are with wicd. Sometimes it will never connect to a wired connection, I have to keep rebooting until it does. If I disable my wireless it will connect usually. This problem doesn't happen with the patched kernel that Ubuntu 11.04 uses.

Another problem is shutting down or rebooting. Sometimes it just won't and I have to hold the power button down. Again, this doesn't happen in Ubuntu's patched kernel.

Third, sometimes KDE will report that my battery is not present, although it is and I may be running on battery. I have to keep rebooting until it finds the battery is installed. This also doesn't happen with Ubuntu 11.04 and it's patched kernel.

Other issues (card reader not working, garbled screen on boot, unable to suspend to RAM, and other problems I can't remember, were solved recently by the latest 2.6.37 kernels).

A final issue I've been having is that if I play a full screen game when KDE's desktop effects are enabled, X will crash and reset when I exit the game. I'm pretty sure this is a KDE issue because it happens in Kubuntu as well.

I have some notes about my laptop online here:
