I followed the instructions in the wiki to upgrade from gnome2 to gnome3. Gnome3 reverted to using VESA drivers though, and since I couldn't get it to work with catalyst or xf86-video-ati I tried downgrading back to gnome2. I removed the testing repo from my pacman.conf, and ran pacman -Syuu. Everything downgraded fine, but now when I try starting gnome-session or awesome from .xinitrc, nothing comes up except the mouse pointer. I can move the pointer around fine though, and I can start xterm from .xinitrc with no problems. X doesn't print any errors.
Anybody know what the problem might be? Any advice would be much appreciated!

deleting .gnome and .gconf dirs from HOME doesn't help? don't forget to backup.

I had to delete/move .pulse-cookie and .pulse. Thanks so much for suggesting that, I would've never figured that out otherwise!

Moved to [testing].
There's no such thing as a stupid question, but there sure are a lot of inquisitive idiots !

Apols for crossposting, but emptying ~/.config/gnome-session/saved-session/ worked for me, see here.
