What is an "FTP cable"? I assume you mean ethernet cable, since FTP is a protocol that has nothing to do with cabling...?

Try this page:

Re: [SOLVED] Unable to connect via an ftp cable with my acer Laptop

I thought that both are the same cables!Yes i mean an ethernet cable! hmm

Thanx for your answer! Here's the problem after reading the page you sent me:

ifconfig eth0 returns no "inet addr".There is not inet addr at all in the output!

Also, "netstat -rn" returns this

Destination Gateway Genmask Flags MSS Window irtt Iface

.

Why is that?Please help! :S

Are you using DHCP or Static IP? Network isn't coming up properly, so check your static ip configuration in rc.conf, or dhcp if you're using dhcp.

O/T:
RE: the cable; FTP is a protocol used for file transfer; it is oblivious to the underlying cabling. For more technical differentiation, FTP is Layer 7, and the Cable is Layer 1 in the OSI model: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OSI_model smile

You should check settings in NetworkManager as well, since your settings broke after installing Gnome 3 that seems like a possible culprit.

Generally off topic:

Just as a small note, there is such a thing as a FTP cable, though it is also sometimes written as F/UTP due to newer standards names. Basically it is a TP cable where the cables in it are wrapped in foil, hence the name Foiled Twisted Pair. This gives shielding from interference like magnetic fields unlike a UTP cable which is an Unshielded TP cable. There are also several other cable shielding standard names.

I haven't lost my mind; I have a tape back-up somewhere.

Never heard them called that; We just call them STP and UTP in Australia.... Thx for the info.
