Arch Linux won't boot anymore (Kernel or Hard drive ?)

Hi everyone,
I have a problem with my netbook. Yesterday, when I launched gimp, he just freeze at the gimp boot screen, the only thing that didn't freeze is my cursor and conky.

When I looked at conky he show me that ram used was at 120mb/1GB and CPU was at 10%... But the HDD led indicator on my laptop was showing me an activity on the Hard drive since the light didn't switch off..

After an hour of waiting and trying to close gimp, I finally got gimp closed but the HDD led just didn't switch off and the pc was as slow as when I firstly launch gimp but when I looked at the conky's actives process he show me nothing relevant so I just turned off my computer.

Then When I tried to reboot it Arch linux didn't reboot and I got the fallowing error :
DO NOT POST FULL SIZE IMAGES -- Follow the image posting rules of the forum --Inxsible

PS : When I tried to boot windows after that (Windows 7) he boot succesfully and I was able to use Windows for 5 minutes... after that nothing he crashes and since then I simply cannot boot into windows (black screen)...

I know my Hard Drive is probably dead... but this doesn't make any sense... I Have this pc since 2009 and I use it like 1 day per week... I remember the Load Cycle Bug on Linux a few years ago that I solved in my Msi Wind, I didn't solve for a solution (or to see even if this bugs persist) since Arch Linux is more up to date that Ubuntu and the bug was solved in Ubuntu so...

I only want to know if there is a way to solve this problem ? (fsck, fdisk and gparted didn't do the trick since when they find an error the Hard Drive shutdown my itself.... I've found that this 3 blocks are bad-blocks 1048592, 1048577 and 1048593, but when I try to blacklist them fsck and bad-block does absolutely nothing...) And if nothing, if there is a way to at last backup my data :S....

NOTE : I cannot remove the Hard Drive from the netbook.

Thanks in advance,
Luis Da Costa

--> Sorry for my very bad english

Re: Arch Linux won't boot anymore (Kernel or Hard drive ?)

Hmm your hard drive seems to have problems :

ATA Error Count: 3300 (device log contains only the most recent five errors)
Reallocated_Sector_Ct 0x0033 100 100 036 Pre-fail Always - 5

-> This indicate that your drive have physical problem, however 5 is low, but is likely to grow

Hardware_ECC_Recovered 0x001a 052 045 000 Old_age Always - 153055609

This number is huge, but I'm not sure if it is relevant (ECC stands for Error Correction Code)

For me, it is an hard drive problem, so you should run self-test to confirm it or deny it :

smartctl - t
and choose one test :
-t TEST, --test=TEST
Run test. TEST: offline short long conveyance vendor,N select,M-N
                        pending,N afterselect,[on|off] scttempint,N[,p]

You should use either short or long parmater in your case, or maybe conveyance

I think you will need to boot on a live media, if your install won't boot

Re: Arch Linux won't boot anymore (Kernel or Hard drive ?)

I'd be inclined to be more cautious than twix and try to use a live cd or usb to backup the data before attempting any tests, if the hdd is failing you may not have that much run-time before it fails completely, if its not a failing hdd then you loose nothing by having an up to date backup.

The problem is that I have no access to the hard drive at all ! So there is no way for me right now to make a backup of the data :S...

I've already done the test with Partition Magic Live using an Usb Stick but the test stops at 10% (event for the short) and gives me a lot of errors.

Re: Arch Linux won't boot anymore (Kernel or Hard drive ?)

Try googling for some howtos about recovering a damaged hdd, here [1] is a useful starting point. I'd guess however that you're probably not going to have much luck with that if you can't get any access to your hdd at all.

Re: Arch Linux won't boot anymore (Kernel or Hard drive ?)

The same thing happens to me almost every time I'm forced to reset my machine. What usually helps is booting into liveCD and then (as root):

e2fsck -f /dev/sda1

If it's not sufficient, try:

e2fsck -cf /dev/sda1

Of course, you have to replace 'sda1' with the actual partition name.

e2fsck -f /dev/sda1

If it's not sufficient, try:

e2fsck -cf /dev/sda1

Of course, you have to replace 'sda1' with the actual partition name.

e2fsck -f /dev/sda4

Gives me the exactly same error :

/dev/sda4: recovering journal
Pass 1 : Checking inodes, blocks, and sizes

Error reading block 1048608 (Attempt to read block from filesystem resulted in short read) while getting next inode from scan.
Ignore error <y>? yes

Force rewrite <y>? yes

Error reading block 1048609 (Attempt to read from filesystem resulted in short read) while getting next inode from scan.

:S..

Re: Arch Linux won't boot anymore (Kernel or Hard drive ?)

Use parted magic, mount the drive and try to rescue data.  I think that's your only option at the moment.  I say this because I had a similar experience last year.  My only solution was to do as I said earlier;  get your data

Most computer stores can replace a hdd, even if it's in a netbook.  You might want to look into that with your local computer shops.
