Internet connection really slow since last update.

So I ran a system update a few days ago, when the moved the hostname from net-tools to inetutils, and since then, when I run system updates, it fails to retrieve most of the mirrors and my download speed is locked at around 4kb/s. It's not my internet, I have a full tower running Windows that tops at around 4mb/s. I know it is not related to the hostnames, but the facts are there, since then, my internet is slow.

*EDIT*: When I ping for a website (www.google.com) doing ping -c 3 www.google.com I lose most of the packets. (66%)
*EDIT2*: Just for the record, here is a picture of my tower:http://i1209.photobucket.com/albums/cc3 … record.png

I haven't been able to take a screenshot of the results on my laptop, the page doesn't even load.
Any ideas ?

Boot any livecd and try the ping. Do you still have the high packet loss?

This is probably absolutely stupid, but I can't seem to be able to boot of any live media. When I boot it says: Remove and disks or other media. I know this is stupid, but what am I doing wrong ?

Each system is different, that message pretty much means the the boot media is unbootable. Make sure you booting from the CD drive and not a floppy drive, flash drive, etc...

Re: Internet connection really slow since last update.

Ok, so I didn't boot of any LiveCD since I don't have any cd's (lame, yes, I know.) but I decided to take shot and boot in fallback mode. For some reason, I was able to connect to speedtest.net and got amazing results: 15.XXmb/x of download and 1.5Xmb/s of upload. Now, just after I ran the test, it went extremely slow again, and I can barely load a youtube video. It also take ages to load a webpage. At least it's good news, I know my system is not completely broken, but still unusable.

As an example, google.com take around 3 minutes to load.

Re: Internet connection really slow since last update.

Are you sure it is the arch box and not your internet connection? By booting a live cd you could see if you are still getting poor speeds. If you get poor speeds on the live cd likely you have an internet connection problem (router/modem/isp level).

Re: Internet connection really slow since last update.

Are you using an n(-draft) wireless network? Since some issues like this have emerged since 2.6.38: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=702722

I would suggest setting your network to b/g mode (<54mbits) and try if your connection's performance improves (helped here). Also kernel-lts might not suffer from these issues.

Hope this helps

Re: Internet connection really slow since last update.

had the same problem. if you're using iwlagn, this my help you:
create /etc/modprobe.d/iwlwifi.conf and add "options iwlagn 11n_disable=1". then relaod the module (or reboot).
this fixed it for me.

Greetings!
