[SOLVED] sendmail installation

Hi,
i'm new in linux, and I see in many logs in the /var/log directory the error about the send mail

/USR/SBIN/CROND[5475]: (CRON) EXEC FAILED (/usr/sbin/sendmail): No such file or directory

what is exactly? that linux cannot send email when an error occur?

how can I get linux to send email to me when an error occur with the error details?

Is there any sendmail package?

Re: [SOLVED] sendmail installation

You can install sendmail or e.g. mailx and make it imitate sendmail or maybe you can tell cron not to send e-mails.

[karol@black ~]$ pkgfile /usr/sbin/sendmail
community/courier-mta
community/esmtp
community/exim
extra/postfix
extra/ssmtp

I have no idea what are the differences between these packages, but they all should provide sendmail.
I'm using heirloom-mailx.

Re: [SOLVED] sendmail installation

For a desktop PC, ssmtp is great: (EDIT: It's in the official repos)
Otherwise, I recommend postfix.

Why are you pointing OP to ArchHurd? Did I miss something?

Whoops, my bad... Google "aur <pkgname>" usually gives me the right domain first tongue

ssmtp is in the official Arch Linux repos smile

Re: [SOLVED] sendmail installation

Sendmail is too ancient'sh. As @fukawi2 said I recommend postfix over sendmail too.

Re: [SOLVED] sendmail installation

In this instant sendmail is not package, but only utility for send messages by cron. This one always present in all listed packages. For desktop ssmtp enough.

Re: [SOLVED] sendmail installation

If it's just a desktop, use ssmtp.

Desktop ==> SSMTP
Server ==> postfix
