[solved] netcfg does not connect to wlan anymore

Hi,

I could set up netcfg connecting to my wlan0 properly. Since two hours, unfortunately, I just get the following output if I try to connect to the same network:

niklaas@len-t420 ~ % sudo netcfg wlan0-NETGEAR
Password:
:: wlan0-NETGEAR up                                                      [BUSY]
 > WPA Authentication/Association Failed
                                                                         [FAIL]

I'm totally clueless because I didn't change anything about my setup. (Yesterday I did a system update but as far as I can remember connecting to my wireless network worked after this update.)

Here are some more configuration files:

niklaas@len-t420 ~ % cat /etc/rc.conf

CONNECTION='wireless'
DESCRIPTION='Automatically generated profile by wifi-menu'
INTERFACE='wlan0'
SECURITY='wpa'
ESSID=NETGEAR
IP='dhcp'

TIMEOUT=60

I removed the WPA key. Originally, the connection could be established without the extra

TIMEOUT=60

but I read at https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ne … ion_failed to give it a try.

As you can read, the profile was generated automatically by

wifi-menu

I'd appreciate any help and can provide more information if it is needed.

niklaas@len-t420 ~ % uname -a
Linux len-t420 3.4.6-1-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Fri Jul 20 08:21:26 CEST 2012 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Thanks.

This output is repeated several times.

I did a quick search on "CTRL-EVENT-DISCONNECTED" and "reason=3" but didn't get any hints. Do you know what it means?

Re: [solved] netcfg does not connect to wlan anymore

Okay, it looks like the issue is probably with wpa_supplicant, though obviously it's using the config as generated by netcfg.
So to narrow it down, can you try and connect manually?

This page should guide you through the process: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Wp … connecting

I'll have a look for the error message....

Re: [solved] netcfg does not connect to wlan anymore

Okay, here's the 802.11 meaning of reason 3: Deauthenticated because sending STA is leaving (or has left) IBSS or ESS

I'm guessing that this is due to the client telling the AP that it wants to close the session? Could this be a signal problem?

EDIT:

there's this suggestion on the wiki: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Wp … ntly_drops

Also if you manually run wpa_supplicant, you can debug with -d (extra d's for more info). See wpa_supplicant(1).

I'm going offline now but good luck, hope that helps.

Re: [solved] netcfg does not connect to wlan anymore

Skanky, thanks for your help.

I knew about the suggestion in the wiki but wanted to try something else because it already worked with this settings of my router before. Eventually, I could solve the issue:

This morning I also got some trouble connecting via ethernet: The connection could be established and after a while connectivity got lost again. I had a look at my /etc/rc.conf because I was unsure about the network daemons which I rembered I set. So I deleted some of those and configured the DAEMONS array as follows:

DAEMONS=(syslog-ng hdapsd @thinkfan net-profiles ifplugd crond @bumblebeed !hwclock @ntpd dbus slim @cupsd) # net-auto-wireless net-auto-wired avahi-daemon

As you can see I removed net-auto-wireless, net-auto-wired and avahi-daemon. I did a restart and could connect to my router via ethernet again.

The solution for the lost of the ethernet connection must have been the fact that I loaded ifplugd and net-auto-wired: At https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ne … auto-wired it's written that net-auto-wired loads ifplugd automatically. As a consequence, ifplugd must have been loaded twice and this caused some trouble...

So I had a working ethernet connection again; being happy I also found out that my wireless connection worked as well. It must have been established by net-profiles successfully.

Because I'm on a trip right now (sitting at Vienna International Airport) I won't be able to do some troubleshooting on how to set the network daemons to not let them interfere with each other. My aim is to configure a system that connects via ethernet or wifi automatically. In my opinion, this is not pointed out well in https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Netcfg because putting every daemon in /etc/rc.conf is not the right solution. :-) (Setting this up would be quite cool because at university I'm using different wifis and also an ethernet connection with static ip. And I want my notebook to change this networks without my help.)

I guess, the next step would by loading net-auto-wired instead of ifplugd -- and also loading net-auto-wireless. Maybe I can also remove net-profiles -- net-auto-wired and net-auto-wireless should do their job. I'll let you know if I know something knew. :-)

Have a nice time, niklaas

Re: [solved] netcfg does not connect to wlan anymore

Hi niklaas,

I get automatic connections to wireless and wired networks, including automatic reconnects. This is what I have in my daemons array, so it *should* be all you need:

DAEMONS=(syslog-ng acpid dbus sensors @net-auto-wireless @net-auto-wired @ldm @netfs @laptop-mode @cupsd @crond @alsa @adsuck)

Which is what you suggest at the end of your post.

Enjoy your trip. smile

Re: [solved] netcfg does not connect to wlan anymore

Can you show us your netcfg config file?

If you have set the NETWORKS array to last then that might be an issue. Simply setting that to wlan0 might fix it.

Re: [solved] netcfg does not connect to wlan anymore

i had a similar problem. the solution / cause was the enabled power management of the wireless NIC.

try
# iwconfig wlan0
and look for Power Management:off (on) ... if it is enabled - try
# iwconfig wlan0 power off

helped in my case .. dunno why smile
maybe newer versions of some software screwed s/t up.

OK, I also changed that. Thank you.

Thanks for this hint, too.

Re: [solved] netcfg does not connect to wlan anymore

I've been re-reading the netcfg section, as I've been installing a new machine, and you can just use net-profiles if you set your NETWORKS array to the required profiles. This is in /etc/conf.d/netcfg.
If you want to connect to any network for which you have a profile, then the net-auto-xxx ones are probably the better ones to use.

The config file is relatively new, and you may not have updated it which means that it will have the default value of "last". As Inxsible says this could be the issue.
So you may just need to set that value, and not change the daemons being used.

I missed this as I was using net-auto-xxx so even though I'd updated the config file when I upgraded netcfg, I had completely forgotten it existed.

Being back at home I could test the changes I made and can now approve that exclusively using net-auto-wireless and/or net-auto-wired in the DAEMONS array and changing the default value of "last" fixed this issue. :-)
