nVIdia crashing laptop

Hello,

I have experienced some system crashes that I had to turn off my laptop with the power button.

I have a Lenovo laptop with Intel graphics and nVidia GeForce GTX 860M. Every time I try to run something using nVidia card, that something crashes. If I don't kill the process quickly, my laptop freezes.

I also had some problems with Xorg crashing when connecting another monitor in the HDMI port and trying to change the resolution, I fixed this by uninstalling xf86-video-intel.

My system is up to date.

a) Hardware

2. try the linux-lts kernel (requires nvidia-lts package as well)
3. try downgrading the nvidia driver

Oh, i just noticed the "fallen off the bus."..


I use Conky to get some stats of my system and my GPU temperature is stable below 50C.

I'm running my laptop with AC power.

I'll try to open my laptop, clean it and check if it is not weird inside.


I installed linux-lts kernel and nvidia-lts and problem persists.

I noticed that optirun glxspheres64 crashes in about 10 seconds, but when I run primusrun glxspheres64, it didn't crash for about 1 minute. I will try runinng something longer now.

Do you also get the cool message "GPU has fallen off the bus." in journalctl?

Yes I also get the "GPU has fallen off the bus" message.

I tried to downgrade the drivers but I couldn't get them to work. Bumblebee complained that it could not load the gpu drivers and modprobe did the same.

Keep me posted if you manage to get the older drivers to work.

I too have a similar problem with an 860M and nvidia 378-13 (-1 and -2), both with bumblebee and PRIME. After a few seconds, the whole system freezes and can only be forcibly shut down. Using the 340xx-driver with bumblebee does not work either (see https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/bu … kernel_4.8), however, using the nouveau driver with PRIME is working.
When using the card with nouveau though, I get this dmesg output:

so it seems to be a power management issue.
With the nvidia driver, also

appears in the journalctl log and seems to be a driver issue(see https://docs.nvidia.com/deploy/xid-errors).
The temperature of the card while using the nvidia driver with bumblebee was not too high (<65°C), but somewhat higher than expected (for a very simple OpenGL program).

I managed to install the old drivers from the Arch Linux Archive:

$ sudo pacman -Rsc bumblebee
$ sudo pacman -Rsc nvidia
$ sudo pacman -U nvidia-lts-375.26-3-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz nvidia-utils-375.26-4-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz

But I cant install bumblebee again:

$ sudo pacman -S bumblebee
resolving dependencies...
looking for conflicting packages...

pacman -Rd nvidia-libgl
pacman -S bumblebee # provides nvidia-libgl, so all dependencies should be met again

Don't try to remove nvidia-utils.

$ sudo pacman -Rd nvidia-libgl
error: target not found: nvidia-libgl

nvidia-utils provides nvidia-libgl.

I can run Xorg, but I can't use nvidia drivers (they are installed).

$ sudo pacman -U bumblebee-3.2.1-12-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz

revert to nvidia-utils 375.26-3 or -2, you'll likely have to downgrade libglvnd as well...

Same problem with 378+bumblebee.
I did so (downgraded from 378.*):
sudo pacman -R lib32-nvidia-utils lib32-opencl-nvidia libxnvctrl nvidia-dkms nvidia-settings nvidia-utils opencl-nvidia

then downloaded from https://archive.archlinux.org/packages the same nvidia-375th bundle (7 packages: lib32-nvidia-utils-375.26-3-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz nvidia-settings-375.26-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz lib32-opencl-nvidia-375.26-3-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz nvidia-utils-375.26-2-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz libxnvctrl-375.26-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz opencl-nvidia-375.26-4-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz nvidia-dkms-375.26-6-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz) and installed it's:
sudo pacman -U *

and it works.

But yesterday updated to 4.10, it does not work:
==> dkms install nvidia/375.26 -k 4.10.1-1-ARCH
Error! Bad return status for module build on kernel: 4.10.1-1-ARCH (x86_64)

Still not working here.

I tried with:
linux-lts 4.9.21-1
bumblebee-3.2.1-12
lib32-nvidia-utils-375.26-1
libxnvctrl-375.26-1
nvidia-lts-375.26-1
nvidia-settings-375.26-1
nvidia-utils-375.26-1
opencl-nvidia-375.26-1

and the /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-nvidia-drm.conf from https://git.archlinux.org/svntogit/pack … idia-utils

and I cant run anything with the GPU:

$ sudo optirun -b none nvidia-settings -c :8
[  315.646275] [ERROR]Cannot access secondary GPU - error: [XORG] (EE) Failed to load module "nouveau" (module does not exist, 0)

[  315.646330] [ERROR]Aborting because fallback start is disabled.


Anyone tried the nvidia-beta from aur?

Edit:
got rid of linux-lts and all nvidia-stuff
Installed nvidia-beta from AUR and i was able to play Skyrim for half an hour.
It's working again.
