IPsec and iptables

I'm struggling to understand what IPsec is all about.

I'm using iptables at the moment. If I compile a kernel without IPsec support, am I asking for trouble? I'm not sure if IPsec is one of those things that silently act in the background to provide security from the base up, or whether I actually have to go out of my way to use it's security features.

Re: IPsec and iptables

IPsec is a VPN protocol... If you're not sure what it is or how you "should" be using then, then you don't need it.

iptables is the firewall built in to the kernel. You're not making an security "holes" by not including IPsec, you *could* be if you leave out iptables.
