KDEMOD4 and now KDE crashes after logging in, no solution yet.

AFter some problem, I finally got kdemod 4 installed and kdm running. But now as soon as I log in, it shows that all the stuff are loading and either I get the kdm login screen again or white and other colored vertical lines with not-responding machine. Also kdm does not show pekwm in the "session type" which is installed and works fine.

Any help guys.

PS: I have posted it in a different thread, but thought of posting this separately under proper thread. http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=52618

Re: KDEMOD4 and now KDE crashes after logging in, no solution yet.

Hey, I'm having exactly the same problem as you sad I have posted a message as well but no luck! seems is something strange this problem. The only difference is that I'm not using kdemod 4, just KDE 4.1 from extra repositories. I tried to reinstall kde including all dependencies, delete config files like .kde4 and all different stuff but nothing at the moment.

Re: KDEMOD4 and now KDE crashes after logging in, no solution yet.

The problem seems to be with knotify. We I tried to start kdemod with startx instead of kdm, kdemod crashed after loading everything and reverted back to console with lots of errors. Here are first few lines of the errors:

ksmserver (2615): Couldn't start knotify from knotify4.desktop: "KLauncher could not be reached via D-bus. error when calling start_service_by_desktop_path: empty"

Here is how my .xsession-errors look:

kdostartupconfig4(2268) main: Running kdostartupconfig.
xset: bad font path element (#70), possible causes are:
Directory does not exist or has wrong permissions
    Directory missing fonts.dir
Incorrect font server address or syntax

Re: KDEMOD4 and now KDE crashes after logging in, no solution yet.

Thanks for the warning. I had not booted into my Arch partition for a couple of days, so will now hold off on upgrades.

This is actually very bad. I was considering Arch as my production system, but the swift move to KDE 4.1 and the resulting problems are making me get second thoughts. I have no experience with KDEmod. Is it normally stable? In that case I could go to KDE legacy.

Re: KDEMOD4 and now KDE crashes after logging in, no solution yet.

I have experienced the same problem a while ago when KDEMOD4 changed its repo-layout so I have to reinstall a lot of KDEMOD packages. To try to solve it I even deleted all my home folder (backuping the important things first, of course),  but it was the same. Uninstalling KDEMOD4, Installing (arch)KDE4 and then Uninstalling (arch)KDE4 and reinstalling KDEMOD4 solved the issue for me (really strange). Maybe you have to do some cleanup/reboot after installing/uninstalling the packages (a lot of).
I hope you can solve this too smile

Re: KDEMOD4 and now KDE crashes after logging in, no solution yet.

Tried installing kdebase and then kdm does not start even though in initab kdm's path is /usr/bin/kdm which seems to be correct. Then I tried firing startx and got the following error on the screen. Could someone please point out the trouble in this error and possible how to get that corrected.

Of note, pekwm works fine.

Re: KDEMOD4 and now KDE crashes after logging in, no solution yet.

Does it have to do something with xorg???? I tried redoing xorgconfig but to no avail.

What video drivers are you using and what video card do you have?

Installed gnome and it came up fine without any trouble. It seems to be bug only to me.

Pacman got updated an probably clobbered your pacman.rc.  Look to see if you have a pacman.conf.pacsave.  Compare pacman.conf with pacman.conf.pacsave, and copy any of your additions (ignored packages, repositories, etc) from pacman.conf.pacsave to pacman.conf.

Re: KDEMOD4 and now KDE crashes after logging in, no solution yet.

The way I understand it, you can't start KDE4 from kdm or using startx.  Now if you can start other windowmanagers from KDM, you say pekwm works?  I assume it doesn't matter if you use startx or kdm to start?  Then MAYBE this will help:

I had some trouble with XFCE4 when I screwed up my config files, so it would crash the Xserver by trying to set a resolution that Xorg did not like.  I "fixed" this by deleting the xfce config files in my home directory, I believe they are in ~/.config/xfce, there's more config files in ~/.config, but I didn't have to change them, just the particular one that set my resolution.

It's possible that some sort of similar problem is occuring w/ your KDE setup, there's something bad in your config files, maybe some settings left over from KDE3 are making your KDE4 crash.  You could test this by creating a new user account and using that to open KDE4, since your new user account shouldn't, by default, have any KDE config files yet, hopefully you will log into KDE successfully.  If this works, then you should delete the config files for KDE in your home directory, and hopefully, when you get them all, you will be able to log in again.

If this STILL crashes Xorg then it's possible that there's something wrong with your system wide config files, which should be in /opt/kde/config.  One thing to do would be to try and revert these to defaults, which I think should be installed by pacman as "filename".pacnew, if you reinstall the packages.  I'm not at all sure, however, that this pacman behavior is consistent becuase I haven't really tested it.  I'm also not sure that your system wide configuration is the problem.  IF it is, then you could probably try using pacman to remove the KDE pacages you have, manually delete your /opt/kde directory and reinstall.

I don't think the problem is your Xorg config, though, for one, you can load Xorg if you use a different windowmanager, and, for two, you're output from running startx only has normal output and warnings, it doesn't have any errors.  (unless I missed them, but I don't see any)

I"m sorry, I'm no expert, but I hope this helps

Re: KDEMOD4 and now KDE crashes after logging in, no solution yet.

I was not having dbus, but I tried after adding dbus and the same thing, kdemod draws the desktop and then vertical white and some colored lines and back to login screen.

I was having this problem with desktop effects enabled. I disabled them, and now the problem disappeared.

how do u disable the desktop effects. Do you mean by starting kdemod by startx? But for me, whether I start kdemod by kdm or startx, it crashes.

Re: KDEMOD4 and now KDE crashes after logging in, no solution yet.

Do this:

cd ~/
nano .kde4/share/config/kwinrc

you should see:
[Compositing]
Backend=OpenGL
Enabled=true

Change to Enabled=false.  Try again smile
