hi guys,
i dont know what's happening... i can open any webpages but when i try to open mail.yahoo.com, i get a server timeout. and recently, i noticed when i sign into my yahoo messenger account using pidgin, i get a timeout also. i have windows on the same computer and im not experiencing this. i mean if this also happens in my windows installation, then i guess its a problem with my router but it only happens in arch... i checked my hosts.deny file and there is no entry there. i dont know what else to check. when i do a search on google, i dont see anything that can help me. any suggestions?

Can you open a terminal and ping those hosts?
ping mail.yahoo.com
ping scs.msg.yahoo.comHave a look in your log files for those IP addresses / hostnames:
grep mail.yahoo.com /var/log/*
grep `dig mail.yahoo.com +short | tail -n1` /var/log/*(You might need to install the dnsutils package for that to work - pacman -Sy dnsutils)

hi kukawi2!
thanks for your reply! i forgot to mention that i can ping both ips with no problem. also, i have dnsutils installed. even with other browsers like galeon, konqueror, opera (im using firefox) i can open mail.yahoo.com. its seems like my arch install is blocking those ips...
i tried looking in the log files but i cant find those ips there... any other suggestions?

If it's working in other browsers, then it seems more like Firefox is 'blocking' those hosts... Maybe your proxy configuration / override policy? (Edit -> Preferences -> Advanced -> Network -> Connection Settings)

I have the same issue, I am using chromium. I can't log in to mail.yahoo.com. I can can access yahoo mail from my windows PC but not from arch. I tried pinging mail.yahoo.com but I get unknown host. I can't find the answers at the wiki. I tried googling for solution but with no luck. Please help I really want to be full time arch user.

Very long shot but ... you can try to spoof the user agent and see if it works.

You dug up a 4 year old thread with an unrelated problem (yours is networking related). Please don't do that, read the forum etiquette on the wiki to know what's expected here in these forums.
