things are running smooth with Arch but there is something bothering me.
I've got a MacBook so I set up Arch as an NFS server to which an external USB HDD is connected, but not always mounted.
this is because OSX can't read/write to ext3 (anymore) so I access the USB through Arch.
My concern is this: when I boot Arch I get warning that the mount point /dev/media/ does not exist, obviously because the drive is not yet mounted.
Isn't there a clean way around this? can and should I configure the USB device to mount somewhere else where it exists? any better suggestions?
thanks heaps!

If I understand correctly....
Instead of letting HAL mount it, just add it to fstab and mount it to /mnt/media
HAL will ignore any devices listed in fstab so it won't mount twice.
Then just update your NFS export to point to /mnt/media instead of where ever it is now.

I like this answer!
I knew there was an easy solution. Actually USB works better somehow now.
When mounting to /dev/ I would often have to hotplug the device, switch it off and on again, to get it to mount - now it just shows up.
My thanks go to you.
